Interview with Eliana Vale

Published 2014-01-02.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a very extensive obsession with Teen Fiction. It is my guilty pleasure and I eat it up. I love love love almost anything by Francesca Lia Block, and continue to fall in love with books like Daughter of the Forest, The Hunger Games, Before I Fall, White Oleander, and The Fault in Our Stars.
What are you working on next?
I'm stuck in between my true obsession as far as my writing-- a book of poetic verse retelling a modern version of Persephone-- and a new idea I started for NaNoWriMo that I never finished, about a woman whose life is literally somehow changed-- her husband, in particular-- and she has to find out how to get her life back.
How do you approach cover design?
I give my beau a sample and summary of my work, along with some inspiration ideas, and he uses his graphic design genius to come up with some ideas of what to do for the cover. When I give the nod on an idea, he works his magic and a beautiful cover soon follows.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That feeling when a story actually becomes so big and vast and organic that it actually gets away from you. When your mind is full of it to the point that you're repeating scenes in your head over and over, perfecting it each time until you can get it down on paper. When I can do that, instead of forgetting every idea I come up with, I know that what I'm writing can really make it. It gets so real that I can't even write it down fasts enough. And when I read it afterwards, and the words are just right and it is just what I wanted, it's an amazing feeling.
