Interview with Elsie Sinclair

What do you read for pleasure?
I mostly read fantasy and science fiction novels. I tend to prefer to more quirky and original ones, and ones that have strong character work. I also love humor.
Who are your favorite authors?
Lately, I've really enjoyed some books written by Agatha Christie, Mervyn Peake, Walter Moers, J.K. Rowling, and Robert Sheckley. Also, I love Douglas Adams, Frank Herbert, and J.R.R. Tolkien.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
The only books I tend to read in eBook form are erotica, and with those I tend to browse until a title or a cover grabs me. I often gravitate toward really outlandish concepts, but I like when they're also very sexy, and not just dumb for the sake of being funny.
What is your writing process?
With erotica, I'll get an idea for a sexual situation I'd like to see, or I'll think of a genre trope that I want to put a sexual spin on. Then, I'll figure out what story elements are needed to set that up, and I build a vague outline. Then, I just start writing. I go into it knowing where the story is going, but with only a broad idea of the specific details, and I make a lot of choices as I write. With the sex scenes in particular, I like to get into the minds of the characters, and react to what's happening to them in the moment and see where the scene goes, rather than having it all planned out in advance.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My day job is what gets me up in the morning, along with the dream that one day I'll make enough from my writing that I won't need a day job. Hey, I can dream ;)
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's probably quite obvious that my most recent book, "Henrietta Diggle and the University of Magic," was inspired by a popular Young Adult series about a magical school that I shan't name ;)

Basically, I wondered what college would be like in that world. What sorts of things would college kids experiment with the way they do with sex, alcohol, and drugs in the real world? I thought it would be interesting to show how magic spells and potions would be abused by young people for pleasure. I touched on it some in the first book, but I have even more ideas for the sequel.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers. I know they say to get a professional to do it for you, but I have a lot of fun with it. I just get photos that I feel represent the feel of my story, and combine them in a way that looks pleasing to my eye. I like to think I have a good eye for that sort of thing. Hopefully I'm right.
What are you working on next?
I haven't com[pletely decided what I'm writing next. It's probably going to be a Henrietta Diggle sequel, but I also have a couple of ideas about Greek mythology, including a book about sirens and one about pandora.

Also, unofficially, I'm working on a story under a different pseudonym that's a bit more on the funny/ridiculous side.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing or working, I'm often hanging out at home with my boyfriend and our cats. Recently, we even fostered a kitten. It was a really good experience, but it was hard to part with the little guy. Really happy he found a forever home though.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really, I know I wrote stories in school when I was really young. And I wrote stories in fiction workshops back in college, but they were mostly pretty awful. I think I have a better understanding of what I want to do with my writing now.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love completing a story and putting it out into the world and seeing what people think of it. I was happy to see people were interested. I haven't gotten many reviews yet, but I look forward to more.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm so new, I'm not sure I have many fans yet, but they're the reason I want to be a writer. I want to share my ideas with others so they can enjoy them.
