Interview with Emily Rowland

Who are your favorite authors?
My all-time favorite author is James Patterson. I fell in love with the Maximum Ride series and that's what truly ignited my passion for writing. Another favorite author of mine is Becca Fitzpatrick. She wrote the Hush, Hush series about a fallen angel that is one of my favorite books as well.
What are you working on next?
I am currently in the final stages of editing a young adult novel. It is titled Destiny Forest: The Wolf Awakens. It is fantasy. It's about a girl who is human but she has the ability to transform into a wolf at any given time. There are other teenagers like her and together they form a pack. Their peaceful existence is threatened when an evil woman discovers their abilities and wants to exploit them for her own personal gain. I'm really excited about getting it published. It's going to be a series and I am already working on book two.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to stay active and be outside. I enjoy playing volleyball and tennis as well as go for walks in the woods. I love curling up by the fire and reading a good book in the winter.
What is your writing process?
I don't usually have a process for writing. Inspiration hits me at the most random times. If I'm out somewhere, I jot the idea down and then when I have a chance later I'll sit down and start writing it. A lot of my writing is editing. It's easy for me to write but the editing is what takes the most time.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a great idea in my head about how I want the cover to be and then I try to draw it and it comes out nothing like what I had in mind. For my first published collection I hired a freelancer, Jeremy Taylor, to design my cover for me. He did a fantastic job and I'll definitely be asking for his help in the future.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My top five favorite books are Tigers Curse by Colleen Houck, Maximum Ride by James Patterson, Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, and Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. There are so many others that I could sit here all day and list them but those five are definitely some of my favorites.
Describe your desk
My desk is actually full of books right now. I have a Mac PC that I use and to the right there's a dragon lamp and to the left I have my knife collection. There are shelves of books that reach to my ceiling. There are lots and lots of books.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I don't remember an exact time where I sat down and said I wanted to be a writer. I just always wrote. I finished my first novel when I was thirteen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love fantasy, magic, and dragons. I'm a dreamer and writing gives me the opportunity to dream everyday and create new worlds and new wonders. I love that there are no limitless to what you can write or dream. The impossible is probably the greatest job of writing for me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'll read anything. My favorite genre is fantasy but I'll honestly read just about anything: westerns, horror, young adult, romance, action, thriller, etc.
