Interview with Emily Hill

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Orleans, mostly. Or that is what I tell people.

The term 'grow up' is throwing me here because I am basically a Military Brat raised by a left-brain scientist and a right-brain, pot-smoking hippie.

New Orleans is where I came into my own around Tarot cards and Ouija boards; seances and tea leaves. It's where I lived when I left the Catholic Church, so in THAT sense it's where I grew up.

I'm sure that I could not have found such plentiful opportunities for forecasting my destiny using tools of the occult in the other cities we lived in while I was growing up; i.e. Springfield, Ohio, Tucson, Arizona, and Seattle, Washington.

I grew up in New Orleans - that's the answer I'm sticking to.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing novellas in second grade. My first one was entitled, 'The Widow', and was probably fifty words in length.

Looking back, the storyline - and title - seems rather dark for a seven-year old. It was about a woman whose husband had died. For years she lived a sad, remote existence. Then one day she remarried. The last words of the story were, "And the widow wasn't lonely any more."

I'm pretty sure I must have been writing about my grandmother whose second husband had been killed on Christmas morning the previous year.

My mother kept that story, written on lined paper, for forty-five years. I found it in her dresser drawer with my grade cards and school pictures after she died.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Voodoo Vision, which is scheduled to be published for the Halloween 2013 season was inspired by my love for the culture of New Orleans. It takes place in 1853 following a Yellow Fever epidemic.

A young ingenue living in the Garden District with her ailing grandmother is loosing her sight. The family priest, sensing a financial windfall once the grandmother dies, conspires to take control of the young woman's inheritance only to be thwarted by loyalties that extend from beyond the grave. [some sexual content]
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Economics and the stinging comment of a thrice-published St. Martin's author:

"All agents and publishers are lying assholes."

The year was 2009, I believed him, and here I am.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Mark Coker and the Smashwords community provide exactly the forward-thinking, innovative platform that I am looking for.

The affirming thing about Smashwords is that my eBook sales reports DIRECTLY reflect my Smashwords marketing efforts - I cannot tell you how refreshing that is as I watch Amazon and Barnes & Noble struggle with sales dashboard 'technical glitches' .

More directly, Smashwords instills my confidence as a small-business person.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I'm a people-person - full tilt Myers Briggs extrovert.

Writing, and more specifically, publishing my writing for the sake of feedback, has given me an opportunity to meet hundreds of people - writers and readers.

Receiving holiday cards from people who have bought my books is something that never occurred to me would happen. What joy to have made friends with so many people from around the world that I otherwise would not have met.

Baltimore's early history played out as an American saga! One of the few literary glimpses into life in early Baltimore. The Jenkins family, their business ambitions and political perspectives come to life in this well-researched debut novel. Losses, loves, and loyalties play on the reader’s imagination as readers are taken from development of the B&O Railroad through the Civil War.
