Interview with Erik Istrup

What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is actually some of my life experiences in discovering who and what I am, and how and why I've become what I am today. By sharing this, I may give someone a new angle on how to view on self and the life one have CHOSEN to live.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The motivation to be an indie author was when I realized how easy it was to publish a book as "print on demand" for very little money. E-books was not so popular at that time. The indie part came, when I found out, that I need to have the exclusive rights to my work and not share the rights with some publisher.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me, is when I get into a kind of flow, where I get the feeling, that I connect to something more than just the "little" me.
What are you working on next?
In the works, I have 1) a book of poems with beautiful illustrations, 2) a translation job (Danish to English) for another writer, 3) a novel about my different lives on Earth and elsewhere, 4) a children's book about the Creator and 5) a follow up on my first book about choosing a simple living where the title may end up being "The cause of life".
How do you approach cover design?
When I'm going to design a cover, I first imagine what will best present the contents in relation to the target customer. Then I design and/or search the Internet for suitable illustrations to use in the design. Since I publish the books as prints too, I have to include the spine and back as well.
What do you read for pleasure?
What I read for pleasure? Well, it has metaphysical contains and could be both "fact" or adventure, and I'm drawn to space (Sci-Fi) as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my personal computer. My focus is on publishing printed books and e-books, and when I read a book it is usually a printed book.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective book marketing technique is to get the books into as many data bases as possible.
Describe your desk
Messy! 2 PCs and a note book, 24-inch monitor with pivot function, five external hard drives, two sets of speakers, two keyboards, three mice, broad-band router, one pile of books, two piles of papers, wires en mass, writing tools and 3 large candles on a plate!
When did you first start writing?
I first start writing in my teens: Rimes, poems and songs. I still got a whole folio of them.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first real book I read of my own free will (not a school thing), was Enid Blyton's The Famous Five (in Danish), which opened a new and exciting world, which I now knew could be found in other books as well. This reading training would greatly improve both my reading and writing skills.

Self-development is very much about getting recognition of what you are a part of. It is about getting an overview and seeing a consistency in your life. This overview removes the frustration of not being able to understand your own situation. When this frustration disappears, you get a larger surplus in life. Overview gives a surplus.
