Interview with Estelle Hough

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Vividly. It was about a poor girl who longed to live in a house some distance from her home. She imagined that it would be a beautiful house because the of the golden shine on its windows. In the end she walked all the way to the house, just to discover it was a dirty, mean looking place - it had been the sun lighting up the windows which had made it beautiful.
Describe your desk
I work on my laptop, so change places and views. At the moment I am in my lounge on the couch, stretching my arms rather as my Siamese cat squeezed in between the laptop and me. It's raining outside.
When did you first start writing?
I decided to become a writer when I was 21. I read books about writing, struggled on, did a degree in Eng lit. and Theory of lit., completed a comprehensive writing course. I must have thrown away thousands of pages by now - and still feel like a slow learner.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had 'Thoughts on Underwear and other essentials' in print, but not 'Barry and the old folks', as it was a color picture book which would cost quite a bit to print. By the time I wrote 'Balance', the publishing market had changed - it seemed the right way to go.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The moments when characters take on their own lives. Also, when you feel eager about your topic.
What do your fans mean to you?
They leave you glowing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to gym,as it counteracts sitting down a lot, but as I live on a smallholding, walking around looking at veld flowers with the cats is another favorite pastime.
