Interview with Johnnie W. Lewis

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I have four younger brothers and, until the end of my 4th grade year, my father was a career Navy man. Multiple moves and even after he retired, we moved just about every time the rent came due! 19 different moves before I married at 19, only one of those in the same house for 6 years. Acres of cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents told oceans full of tales -- some tall, some true -- and I remembered them all! So when I started writing, it wasn't hard for me to SEE what my characters could see, because I had already been there and done that!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Finding out that (1)it takes .5 to 1.5 YEARS for a book, once accepted by a brick-and-mortar publisher for publication (IF that happens!), to become published and find it in a book store and (2)only IF the B&M Publisher can "feel" the book's "worth," financially to him/herself will the book be published.

Even with those factors satisfied to suit everyone involved in the "pipeline" process, the author is STILL the only one who can make the book sell!

If ALL of the work is going to fall back on me, after the publisher has waved that magic "publish" wand, why should that company retain 90% of the proceeds of the book? Better to get 60% to 70% myself, if I'm going to be doing 90% of the work!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing a book with MY name on it, on a shelf! Whether or not that shelf is in my house or a bookstore, MY NAME is on that book, NOT someone els's name who only said "I always wanted to write a book..."
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The next line in my book. Whatever book I'm writing at that time!
What are you working on next?
A sequel to my "Babs Book" series, another mystery for Babs and King Rosie to solve.
What is your writing process?
Brainstorm with ALL of my multiple personalities for a few days on a particular topic, then sit down at the computer and let the story start writing itself, straight from God, and out through my fingers! Sometimes there's a draft or an outline, sometimes not. Depends on the story or the non-fiction book that's coming out of my fingers!
How do you approach cover design?
Let the story tell me what needs to be the central point on the cover, draw that central image or scene, add striking color and/or "banners" around that scene, name at the bottom. Simple!
Who are your favorite authors?
Almost ALL of my favorite authors, except for maybe Moses, are mystery writers: Arthur Conan Doyle, Tom Clancy, Patricia Cornwell, Craig Johnson. Outside of the mystery genre, I idolize Louis L'Amour, and even then, a lot of his are mysteries.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mysteries, Archeology Magazine, Classics, anything I've never read, plus I'll re-read a few that I read years ago.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
Describe your desk
Crowded, cluttered-yet-organized, paper veneer ripped off, covered in tchotchkes, old empty coffee cups and stacks of desk trays holding all my ideas on paper. WITH a state-of-the-art computer!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Traveling with my Better Half, participating in my grandchildren's activities, marveling at my children's growth and development.
