Interview with Francis Xavier Aloisio

Published 2015-10-30.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Through 'word of mouth,' my website and internet.
Describe your desk
It's like a kitchen table...lots of ingredients to create a perfect meal!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the small island of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. But I spent some years in South America especially Peru and the many more years in England. Both my paintings and my writing are influenced by these colourful cultures.
When did you first start writing?
I never thought that I would be a writer and an author. I hated writing and I hated grammar. So I started very late in my life to write. Firstly I started painting, and it was only in last 8 years that I switched the brush to the pen or the computer. This is when I exchanged the the canvas to the paper or epaper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My last book/novel: The Age of Magic and Wisdom, brings to light the forgotten history of mankind. It reveals new insights about the Maltese sacred sites and their important role at the threshold of the New Golden Era. The handbook I'm publishing through Smashwords is an alternative perspective to the sacred sites/temples on Malta and it gives us a metaphysical and alternative view of these singular prehistoric stone structures. My first novel: Islands of Dream, delves into the magic and hidden mysteries of the Maltese Prehistoric Temples. These mysterious structures sat there in isolated silence for many centuries, and finally the secrets of these incredible prehistoric sites of Malta and Gozo are uncovered.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just had a call or inspiration to write about my experiences in life and about my culture and its sacred land.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is my first time publishing the second edition to my Alternative Handbook. Smashwords will open the handbook to a world market.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing my thoughts, my dreams, my insights taking shape on paper and on the computer screen.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am the greatest fan to what I do. I have my wife that shares my passion...,and, anybody else can be a fan of what I share with them.
What are you working on next?
At present I'm finishing editing my 3rd novel: The New Temp[le Dreamers about the Stories & Myths from Malta after Atlantis. It has the new kids - the Indigos, Crystals, Rainbow and Diamond Children - The Future Temple Dreamers as the main characters. After that my autobiography.
Who are your favorite authors?
Too many to contemplate from the classics to the novelists. Generally, those that touch my soul and make feel better and smile!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The next adventure in life and the expectation to face the unexpected!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy cooking - Mediterranean food; walking in nature; travel and feel the breeze of the wind and the sound of the crushing waves.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Search engines...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was about an 'overview' - my life’s expression in a nutshell.
What is your writing process?
I am inspired by dreams, by inspiration and insights, by others work and...and my wife!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
This is going to take me back in time....60 years or so....Treasure Island!
How do you approach cover design?
In all my novels, I generally use one of my paintings.
What about your last book: What a Trip? It's your autobiography!
“Why don’t you write about your life experience?” This was the question that an old lady asked me one day when I was living in Canada. I never thought that there was anything interesting in my life worth writing about, much less anything for others worth reading about. Generally only famous, important and successful people write their autobiographies. I had no such attributes. However, having some time to kill while I was in Vancouver, I decided to write an ‘overview’ of my life without much detail.
On my return to Malta, an opportunity arose to attend a Tantric workshop on the island of Gozo, which is something outside of my normal curriculum as an artist and spiritual facilitator. However, I knew deep in my heart that God works in mysterious ways. My inner voice was saying: Why not quench my curiosity by venturing into the unknown? With a thirst to discover my true emotional feelings, I listened to an inner voice.
The time was ripe to go beyond my fears and be true to myself, particularly in regard to my sexual expression, which had been suppressed for far too long! This workshop was a first in Malta and also for me.
After the week in Gozo, the urge to put on paper my experience of the Tantric week was very strong. That inner voice came back again, saying: Start writing about this workshop! Somehow the story wanted to be written, and once I started writing, things came to me unexpectedly. The book then took on a life of its own, and one chapter led to another. I was very much surprised with the creation that was taking place in front of me. As I had never planned to write my life’s story, the surprise was even greater. The life story, as a self-reflection autobiography, came to completion with a combination of conscious intent and unconscious attraction.
The months spent on unravelling my whole story—from those early years of my childhood up to the present moment—turned out to be a long period of reflection, re-evaluation and meditation. What surprised me was that, while I was writing and exploring my past, I discovered my sexuality and became more connected to my spiritual path and inner growth. These two diametrically opposed entities were very much working and moving in tandem. My ‘coming of age’ spiritually came with the lesson of being in love, and a true sexual loving relationship came much later with my surrender to Spirit.
Although my past conditioning was weighing heavily on me, I felt at the same time, a sense of relief and transmutation during the whole process of writing. It gave me the opportunity to, first, detox my whole system from past restrictions and to release sexual emotions and buried dreams, and, second, to come to the point of spiritual fulfilment and new consciousness.
I think the book is a ‘first’ in Malta, in so far as someone is daring to write on such a personal subject and in such an open manner. The trip is an expression of my personal journey on the long trip towards my own happiness and spiritual fulfilment.
But, I believe that in some way, it is also about you, the reader, on your own journey in search of your own ‘truth.’ Deep down, I know that some of my doubts, pain, anger, aspirations, struggles, frustrations, restrictions, handicaps, observations, achievements and experiences are similar to yours. But in spite of all the past conditioning and negative situations, we can all take control of our destiny and change our lives for the better. I share mine with my readers.
Are you good in saying 'That's it and goodbye?'
Yes, very much so. Time to say goodbye!
