Interview with Fabian Black

Q: Do you have a book that was easiest to write or one that was the hardest?
On reflection I think ‘Deadlines’ was the hardest one to write. The main character, Michael, is a complicated young man. He’s emotionally fragile, almost ethereal and ever changing. He hides from himself, so you only get to know and understand him as he gets to know himself. Why he is as he is and why he acts as he does is revealed via snatches of dreams and flashes of memory. He was a hard character to pin down.
Q: Do you have a favourite book or author that inspired you to write?
I have lots of favourite books and authors across lots of different genres. My reading tastes are eclectic to say the least. However, quite a few years ago now, I read a beautiful book called ‘October Sky’ by Homer H. Hickman. The book’s themes touched me on several levels. I felt great empathy with regard to the protagonist’s childhood relationship with his father, as portrayed in the book. I felt moved to write to the author regarding some of the emotions his words had provoked in me. I never expected a reply. To my surprise I received a beautiful letter in return in which the author complimented me on my writing, saying my words had moved him. That kind letter inspired me and gave me hope I could be a writer.
Q: Is music a factor for you while you are writing? Do certain songs put you in the right frame of mind to write certain stories?
Music is definitely a big factor for me. I always have music playing as I work. I use it to create mood and to set pace. I find it helps as a memory trigger too. When I go back to a project I haven’t worked on for a while, it can often feel cold, as if I’ve lost the scent of it. Playing the song I was listening to at the time of creation brings the characters back to mind and helps me slip back into the story.
Q: What books are currently on your nightstand?
A children’s book called The Fire Eaters by David Almond. I enjoy reading YA fiction. ‘Drag Queen’ by Robert Rodi. ‘When I Fall in Love’ by Miranda Dickinson and ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The latter is an old favourite. I dug it out in anticipation of the film release.
Q: What can readers expect next from you?
I’m planning to start work on the fourth story in my ‘Postcards from a Seaside Village’ series. I also want to give Tarn and Twinkles from ‘The Stardust Diaries’ another outing and I have several other projects at various stages of development.
