Interview with Spencer Dean

What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, being close to the age of the character in the book, I can relate to the character in many ways. Not just in age but in personality and - well - good looks. Everybody's vain sometimes in their life. I mean, at an early age, like so early that you've never even had a girlfriend before, it's important to look good. So I do.
Getting off topic here (like the character in the book). So let's get back on track. At such an early age it's surprising to find me writing books, like actual good books. Like, books that get really popular really really fast. Really really popular really really really fast. Really really . . . ugh . . . the thing is, I'm smart, like the character in the book. And by now you must hate me for pretty much being in love with myself but I need to boost my self esteem, okay?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The thing is, I LOVE writing. Like, seriously. In fifth grade is was kind of an inside joke of how much I loved writing. People would ask me to say, "I HATE WRITING" and I would cringe while doing it. When we skipped writing class for the day I would pretend to beat up my friend and get really angry, and he would play along. Also, it's finally something I can brag about. So there's that (I'm afraid of getting turned away from this website for my abysmal personality). I mean, I was already PRETTY MUCH a published author, since I own a website and write my stories on it. And it just feels so good to know that. That's why I became an indie author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, I haven't really seen any success yet knowing that I just published a book onto this website an hour ago (at the time of typing this). But hey, I can see from the success of many other people that I can certainly become successful very easily on this site. I have a feeling I'll become rich by the end of the week. And of course I'll spend it all on video games because, hey, I'm still a kid. Gotta make the most of it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing has to be the popularity. It just feels so good to be popular, you know? I'm kind of the outcast in school, like, I have a few great friends and acquaintances but other than that I'm literally not popular at all. But I'll show them! I'll show them all!
What do your fans mean to you?
Having fans is going to be a delight (if I get any fan service). Like I said, I strive to be popular. You know what happens after you publish an eBook? You get noticed and you're halfway to success! And that's when you become popular and get fans. And fans = popularity. It's simple, really.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a very long story. I plan on making it 20k words or more, and since I have a busy schedule what with homework and all that, it's going to be a long time until I get that story published. So I'll definitely be doing some short stories in between.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are John Green, J.K. Rowling (obviously, because when you have nothing you read you pick out The Prisoner of Azkaban because it's long AND READING LONG BOOKS MAKE YOU COOL), and Dav Pikey (mostly because he brings back some great childhood memories. And that's literally it, I know close to nothing about him. And can I even say I have childhood memories yet when I'm not even done with childhood? Hmm).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well, school, obviously, because there's no escaping the wrath of SCHOOL! AHHHHH! And on Fridays it's the fact that it's Friday but then you find out you have soccer practice so you're like awwww. And then on Saturday I'm inspired to get up and bike ride (after my soccer game I DON'T WANNA GO ANYMORE MOM), and on Sunday you're like ahhhhhh Sunday. But really, it makes me feel better when I think about how I can write.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I draw, bike ride, read, do homework, go on the internet. But I'll mostly be playing video games, because I can.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well, I will usually just wait around until someone recommends a book to me or I will find a book that is popular. Many books that are becoming movies are also books I will read because I want to read the book before I see the movie. It's just a hunch.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Maybe, but I'm not sure. I remember writing a remake of Goldilocks one time and that's when I first discovered how great I was at writing, but I don't know if it was my first story.
