Interview with Becky Rose Johnson

What are you working on next?
I am going to be working on public speaking and promoting my hobby: PocketBoob by Beck, Because Everyone Craves Kindness. It is a handbag or beer coozie made out of brassieres. Strange, I know. But they make people smile and I donate a portion of the proceeds to a variety of charities.
Who are your favorite authors?
When it comes to fiction, I'm a fantasy buff, so J.K. Rowling obviously...but my favorite is Elizabeth Haydon.
As far as nonfiction, My favorite author is Robert G. Allen. One Minute Millionaire is one of my absolute favorites because it is both fiction and non-fiction!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My personal right to the pursuit of happiness. My adventurism and desire to overcome my own fears. My students and colleagues, promising each day will be different but filled with smiles and kindness.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Teaching, it's my day job AND my PASSION! I love seeing the spark in my students eyes when they finally understand a new concept! I love what they do with their new found knowledge through projects and performance objectives even more. These require you to teach the skill to another, which is the greatest tool for understanding.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Personal relationships with the up and coming authors, recommendations from my mentors and stumbling.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a joke I told my aunt and laughed incessantly about, even though I don't understand it to this day!
Why did the elephant where 3 black socks and 1 white sock?
Give up yet?
Because they love each other!
My mentors say I exude love, I like to think this first joke is indicative of that nature!
What is your writing process?
Piece meal. I typically know the gist of what I want to say. I start in the middle and work my way to a good intro and conclusion.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Danny and the Dinosaur by Sid Hoff. I was in the 3rd grade before I learned how to read and became aware that I COULD do it. It was the first book I was able to read all by myself without needing help with even one word! I was over the moon!
How do you approach cover design?
Do it myself for the grunge, beaten down EBook versions, indicative of the adversities I have overcome. I have an incredibly talented friend . The designs she has come up with for the hard copies I describe as elegant and professional.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love fantasy because, let's face it, after all I have been through...I just like to escape into another world sometimes.
Describe your desk
A messy desk is the sign of a genius at work. I don't know whose quote that is...but is definitely descriptive of me!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Pretty much I started feeling like death would be better than another day walking in my own shoes. This feeling sucked! It was mine to overcome through drastic changes in my life. I feel it is my duty to at least share my story, just in case it can help even one person. The problem is that our abusers keep us so isolated that we literally feel incredibly alone. I hope my book brings some light and helps someone feel a little bit less lonely.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My mentor, Robert G. Allen, always says that there is a story in all of us. Everybody is an expert at something. If we share the struggles we have survived, others might not have to struggle...that is basically what he teaches, finding the fabulocity in yourself.
