Interview with Floyd Larck

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Western Pennsylvania, Oakmont to be exact. Oakmont is a suburb of Pittsburgh and is well known for it's tree-lines streets and its golf course.
When did you first start writing?
High school was when my English teacher encouraged me to start writing. Two disappointments in my life are that I cannot remember his name. And I did not take up his advice by entering a completely different field of employment.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I Am Julius... A Centurion of Rome
I took the New Testament and traced several of the paths where Jesus had traveled describing lesser known characters from the Bible. This was accomplished through the travels of a former Roman Centurion and his traveling partner.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The ease of publishing my books. It's nearly impossible to get published in the print side of writing unless you have a following. Building a following is easier and sometimes quicker through the indie process.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords does not tie an author's hands when it comes to advertising their eBooks. When I was at Amazon I was always receiving notices to remove advertising of the books from various web sites which were built to promote certain books. And then there is the wider range of outlets where my materials can be distributed.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching others read them. Watching their faces as they react to scenes within the storyline.
What are you working on next?
A book describing the building of Solomon's Temple. So many nameless characters and places existed back then so I give them more emphasis in the building of the Temple.
Who are your favorite authors?
In no particular order (because they are all excellent writers):
Frank Peritti, Randy Alcorn, Ted Dekker, James Byron, Huggins, Jerry Jenkins, Kenny Kemp (The Welcoming Door)

You can see now why I write the stories I produce.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most are because of the author's reputation or the subject matter (usually non-fiction materials).
What is your writing process?
I hand write everything onto college spiral-bound notebooks. Then I transcribe them into Microsoft Word using voice-to-text software. My wife and youngest daughter are both teachers so I use them as editors of all my materials.
How do you approach cover design?
I generally sub-contract it and describe my needs to the artist. Most are designed to grab a prospective reader's attention through the use of a eye-catching image and easy to read text.
What do you read for pleasure?
A variety of books. I really enjoy the Peritti/Dekker/Huggins books with demons and thrilling story lines in them. I also read a great deal of books Christian in nature, some are fiction but a great many are non-fiction as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I design web sites using the WordPress platforms to get the materials into the search engines without paying high fees for people to do SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for me.
