Interview with Floyd D.A. Miley III

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I started writing at a very early age. When I was in elementary, each summer my mother made me read a novel and write a report. The first book I read was Anne Moody's, Coming of Age in Mississippi. The way she used words to depict the smells, sights, and sufferings she endured her growing up in the rural south fascinated me. When I read Langston Hughes' Mother to Son in the sixth grade, I knew I was going to be a writer.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In 2010, I lost everything that I worked hard to get leaving my life shattered in pieces. One night while packing, I ran across Langston Hughes' poem, A Dream Deferred and it got me to thinking about what happened to my dreams of being an author and motivational speaker. In what should have been one of my darkest moments became the best thing that could have happened to me. I found my passion to chase my dreams and become the person I was meant to become. I want to help others discover their purpose and recognize their greatness.
How many hours a day do you devote to writing?
I try to write every day for at least two hours a day when my schedule permits
How did you come up the concept to write the book?
Much of the credit for the concept came from the most successful football coach in the University of Tennessee's history. Brigadier General Robert Neyland devised a set of principles in 1930 that when applied increased the team's chances of winning. The turnaround point for me in college was when I realized that his Game Maxims can be applied to the pursuit of a dream or goal.
Are the experiences based on someone you know or events in your life?
Both. The experiences are based on events in my life and I detail different segments from people who have been instrumental in my growth and development.
Is there a message in the book that you want readers to grasp?
Recognize Your Greatness. Look deep inside and discover or re-discover the person that you were destined to become. It is an affirmation that the reason your existence extends beyond making a living. Everything was created with a purpose for nothing exists without one
When you're not writing, what do you enjoy doing?
My favorite hobby is sleeping, but I enjoy playing softball, playing Texas Hold 'em, listening to music, and thinking.
