Interview with Francis Louis Guy Smith

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Pascagoula, Ms. I was influenced by a love for Saturday afternoon western movies, like Roy and Gene. Sunset and Rocky and all the great silver screen cowboys.
When did you first start writing?
My first venture into writing was20 years ago with Oath of Color. A tale of South Ms. from 1926- 1956. Murder and Mayhem in the old south.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest adventure is about a pioneer girl who grows to be an all around cowboy on Texas trail drives, and in the captivity of Comanche's, loses he right leg. She continues t grow and marries a moutain man who gives her an only child who also gets taken by Comanche..
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After many efforts at getting published, and rejection without my work being looked at, decided to publish my own. I have not been disappointed. I would recommend indie publishing to all who want to feel the satisfaction of seeing their work in print.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provides access to many e-book outlets to display your books and even makes them available to book stores.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The pleasure of seeing a story come to fruition. It is fun o see the crooks and turns a tale can take you on as you put the words down
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the only reason to keep writing. Their input is the only true criticism a writer will accept. The honesty of a reader can improve your writing skills.
What are you working on next?
I am writing about a boy who after being orphaned becomes part of an 1850's circus family. All of my westerns are Christian, and are written so young adults and teens can read without all the cussing and wild fantasy sex so prevalent in today's society.
Who are your favorite authors?
Only one favorite. a man called Louie Lamore.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The prospect of beginning or ending another adventure. I am on my 16th Christian western.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Looking for ideas for the next one.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
On line e-book distibutors such as Smashwotds & Kindle, and nook.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oath of Color.
What is your writing process?
Just begin by putting one word down, then the others flow.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Probably in grammar school. Toby Tyler comes to mind.
How do you approach cover design?
I create my own covers through a graphic design software, based on the concept of the stories characters.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Louis Lamore Sackett series. A great family epic spread among many books.
What do you read for pleasure?
Don't read much. To busy writing for others to read and enjoy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Market days, trade fairs gift shops (hospitals) E- book readers.
