Interview with Frederick Anderson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the sunny city of Durban, South Africa during the 1970's and 1980's. Due to the oppressive Apartheid system adopted by the government, my formative years and my future was destined to be bleak. However with the fall of Apartheid in 1994, the ability to freely express thoughts and ideas without fear or persecution, exploded with people of different races being able to, for the first time, converse and socially integrate. So being forward, cynical and sometimes abrasive in my thoughts and expressions of positions of authority, and the controllers of "power", in my world, seems completely normal.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With an engineering background I always shared an interest in mechanics. So when free time permits I enjoy tinkering with anything that has a motor. My car probably shares the brunt of it - with maybe one too many services in the year. Else my two little kids keep me well utilised in the arts (face-painting, drawing, puppet shows, etc) or as a personal chauffeur to every kids party in the year!
What was the best advice given to you?
If someone or something does not bring any happiness to yourself or the people close to you, then there's no reason to invest your time in a sad place. Don't wait or procrastinate to move on.
