Interview with G. Allen Clark

Published 2018-01-05.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm currently reading "Origins" by Dan Brown. As an author, I read, not so much for the story as I do for the structure of a good story. Of course Dan Brown is a master at structure. As I wrote my first three books as a series - started by a poem I wrote 20 years earlier about a hitchhiker, I started reading Lee Child's, "Reacher" series based on a suggestion from a friend. I like Child's obvious anger with government and rules. While my character "Vince Roberts" is a law abiding hitchhiker in a day and age where hitchhiking is almost illegal, "Reacher" is the rebellious mover and shaker my character could be and is when pushed.
I also read scientific research articles. For example, I'm fascinated by nanotechnology for medical treatment seeing both the positive as well as the future negatives of this technology
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Nook. I bought mine and one for my daughter who is also a writer and avid reader. I can use it at night to help me sleep without disturbing the wife's sleep.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still experimenting. I don't know the answer to this yet. I'm looking to Smashwords for advice.
Describe your desk
A cluttered mess. I am a visual person. If it's in front of me, I get it done. In a desk drawer or file, and it's out of mind and forgotten. Therefore, if you want to anger me, organize my desk. Then run. I'm screwed up and pissed off for a month afterwards.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a mixed race neighborhood of Michigan's auto industry. My childhood friends were Jews, Black, Italians, Pollacks, and Swedes. As kids we never knew the difference and never asked. We didn't need to, our dads were the real Archy Bunkers of our generation and they told us.
All my friends were treated as they treated me. We fought, we cussed each other out, we played ball together, we won, we lost and we all bled the same color blood. We also learned about life and all without the aid of some psychologist. All of us were probably ADD, ADHD, or some other combination of letters, we didn't know it. Had we known, we wouldn't have cared. As a result however, I developed a wide variety of interest and understandings which broadened my education immensely.
When did you first start writing?
1968 sitting about a WWII Submarine that was resurrected and stationed down in Key West, sent there to protect the U.S. against the very real threat of a Cuban invasion. I started a journal and have wrote ever since. It just took me a many years and many journals, to publish anything. When I got my first computer in 1988, that was when I started my real writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Clark is a Irish/Scottish derivative of Cleric. We have been writers throughout our family history. I had things to teach people and stories that were running around in my head. Getting them out on paper was a natural thing for me to do. As for the indie part, it turns out that it suits my style as I have always been independent.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creation process in my non-fiction titles and finding the right historical facts to build my fiction titles from
What are you working on next?
Promotion of my newest non fiction book "2nd Hand Flip." There will be another book in line with this one, and then by the time I ma done with that one, it will be time to update "2nd Hand Flip" with new information I find this year.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The new chapter that has been running through my head the night before and that I jotted down in my notepad. I grab the pad, a cup of coffee, my slippers and my pants and head to my office ready to write. Once I have it out of my head and in rough draft and saved, then I am happy I got up.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Spending time with my wife on the weekends, searching for, buying and selling antiques or linens for our "Mom & Me, Vintage Linens, Lace and Antique" store in Colorado Springs. We either love the hunt for just that right unique piece or we love spending time together. Either way, we don't question it, we just do.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
From recommendation from select friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a story poem of a hitchhiker, based on a interview I did with a hitchhiker who came out of Alaska and ended up on a beach in Naples, Florida, where I was a cop. I wrote the poem and it later formed the basis for my character and story outline of my novel, "Show Low"
