Interview with Gerald Kithinji

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. Kamandu's Bull. Before that I was writing poetry.
What is your writing process?
The short stories usually come complete and I sit down to flesh them out.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not really. I grew up hearing stories of Mau Mau freedom fighters but those were scary. Then in school I started hearing Christian stories. By the time I actually read a story I already knew quite a number. But I suspect the first one was 'O my, what do you know?' and that is a translation from Kimeru (Kenya) my native language. It made wish I knew more!
How do you approach cover design?
I try to think of something that captures the mood or scope of the entire story. Then I talk to an artist. I have also researched for appropriate photos and have been lucky to find three. I seek permission to use.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible
Wit and Wisdom of Africa
Treblinka
Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Red Phoenix
For one good reason or another.
What do you read for pleasure?
Novels in French or Portuguese.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
PC so prefer pdfs or epubs.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None yet.
Describe your desk
Very small. Five books. Two cell-phones. Cup of coffee. Some CDS. 3 Flash disks. Nail cutter. English, French and Portuguese dictionaries.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
On the eastern slopes of the 17000ft Mt Kenya over 250kms from Nairobi and Nairobi environs. Love countryside and write countryside stories, mainly.
When did you first start writing?
At School we had SEP- Saturday Evening Paper and I wrote quite a bit. Wrote a collection of over 100 poems while at University- Whispers At Dawn.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Had a friend at school years ago who lived on the fringes of Masai Mara National Reserve. The book is titled 'Masai Mara Adventures with Olê Ntutu.' I do not know where he is now. Just thinking of him inspired the book. But, of course, that's not his real name.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Publishing in Africa is a pain. The few publishers there have only capacity for school text. Only 5% remains for other books. So you have to queue for years!!! Even when the publishers like your story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm waiting to see. At least the books are online within a very short time in many formats.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating. Writing (for me) is more satisfying than reading. I have young and grown kids. I write for both. And for world readers!!! That makes me infinitely happy.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I mean anybody and everybody that takes a bit of time to read my books is a darling!!
What are you working on next?
I'm several pages down the road... visit my page every now and then.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Unfinished business- and that means writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Researching, for I write articles and poems. Or reading something in French or Portuguese.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Smashwords is a good resource.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read what I can get. It's not really a choice.
Are you rich?
No. Not yet.
