Interview with Douglas Miller

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love worlds.

I like creating them, and I like exploring them. Writing fiction allows me to do both at the same time.

By publishing my works, I don't just keep those worlds bottled up inside. Instead I get to share them with other people. Nothing is so exciting as that.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The earliest story I can remember reading is "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. As a kid, it was great. I loved all the different monsters in it.

I don't remember writing as a kid, but I did find some stories that I wrote then. Most of them featured monsters in some way. Usually having a character who was friends with one or more monsters. This was almost definitely inspired by the "Wild Things" in Sendak's book.

Monsters and other bizarre creatures continue to fascinate me today.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm not sure that I can remember the first story I *ever* wrote, but the first story I remember writing was in 4th grade. It was about this boy who went on a class field trip to some scientific research lab. He wandered away from the group and into a secret portion of the facility where a shadow-being was created/escaped from the lab. The rest of the story was him trying to chase down the shadow-being and stop it from doing evil things.
Who are your favorite authors?
My all time favorite author is Frank Herbert. The Dune series is one of the first series that I can point to as being inspirational for my own work. It captured my imagination and it made me think all at the same time, which I think is a sign of a good book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm fascinated with the technological developments that are going on in today's society, and I think that the "Heroism and Other Lies" series is built on that fascination. I am very pro technological progress, but at the same time I see that there are dangers of certain technologies that need to be considered. Things get further complicated when technologies are influenced by profit goals rather than the goal of improving life. These are all themes that come into play in "Heroism and Other Lies".

Of course, it's also an action/adventure story that's heavily influenced superhero comics, television, and movies.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have wonderful friends and family that I greatly enjoy spending time with.

I also continue my creative endeavors beyond just writing by running and playing in numerous tabletop roleplaying games. I find that these are excellent ways of experiencing new stories and of sharing my own stories/worlds in an interactive way.
