Interview with G.S. Luckett

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I chose self-publishing to be more in control of my writing. My background started as a screenwriter and while writing screenplays there were times that the whole process became held up when there was interest in a script, only to fall through. I also believe that e-books are changing the way people publish and that is here to stay. I like being part of that.
How long have you been writing books?
I have been writing for over ten years. I started writing screenplays but it was not until a couple of years ago I started writing books. Gates and Alpha Hunter are both from award winning scripts that I wrote.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped to get my work distributed widely and in front of as many people as possible.
What's your writing routine like?
I am a work-at-home dad and go to school, so I have a routine with flexibility worked in. I try to get most of my writing and marketing of my books as early as I can in the day. I set a goal of 2500-3000 words per day and write everyday on a book. If I miss a day, I roll the numbers into the following days. I have a desktop in my office, a laptop for wherever, and IPad that I have to write with and change my locations where I write. I think it helps with creativity. I have even written while at the library by my house as a change of scenery.
How do you approach cover design?
I am lucky in the cover design department. My best friend, Joshua Minnis, is a graphic designer and I feel he does a great job for me. I have known him forever and that is an asset when describing what type of cover I want. I approach a book cover like making an old style movie poster. I use it to give a hint at what the world of the story will feel like.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I love Twitter. It is just quick posts and there are so many willing authors to help get the word out. I also use Facebook and my own website, http://gsluckett.wordpress.com/. I think getting quality reviewers also helps to spread the word. Recently, I have been getting a lot of interest by posting previews on Noisetrade, http://books.noisetrade.com/gsluckett.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, To the Gallows, is a Historical Fiction/ Action Western based on one of the first African-American U.S. Marshals. Cole Winters finds out that his estranged Native American brother-in-law is wanted for murder and bank robbery in the territories. In order, to protect him from being hunted down by hired guns, Marshal Winters does the only thing he can. He hunts down his brother-in-law himself.
What are you working on next?
In November, I plan to participate in the NaNoWriMo on Smashwords with a new book, Mortem. It will be a Dystopian/Zombie genre novel based on an infection caused by red rain. A bit of a new spin on the genre, I believe. I will have more coming out as the story develops.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time with my family. We enjoy the outdoors here in the Pacific Northwest. I also participate in martial arts and kettlebells. If not that, I am researching and brainstorming new ideas
Why should a reader want to read your books?
My books are fast-paced, action-packed and exciting with twists that you will surprise you. If you want to get lost in an adventure, give them a read.
