Interview with George Vaughan

What's the story behind your latest book?
This particular story was one that has about as interesting a foundation as I'll ever come up with, I think. In January of this year, I payed a visit to America, for some concerts and birdwatching. It was a trip which, in the best way imaginable, I will never, ever forget! One of the things that truly surprised me was visiting the rather infamous state of Alabama. Very like Brooke, this story's main character, I was really, really taken aback by the city of Birmingham... but then I ended up in the countryside, the beautiful Magnolia country around the Gulf Coast and Mobile, and I can honestly say it was among my favourite parts of the entire holiday. As well as being fabulous for birdwatching, not a single one of the negative "Deep South" stereotypes was on show, besides that most remarkable of accents, and I left Alabama determined to make a story somewhat against that very trendy view to dislike America as a nation. Clearly, it has its problems... but the positives more often than not outweighed any issue, at least as far as I could tell.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing about fifteen years ago. Being young and rather inexperienced, to say the least, these early stories weren't exactly great reads. You certainly won't see any special editions of them on Smashwords, I can tell you now! However, I still remember how much I loved writing these little tales... and surely that enjoyment counts for something.
What does a normal writing day include for you?
Normal? Well... I usually write best late at night; with far less distractions and obligations going on, that tends to work the best. I can be found writing in a comfortable chair with my ideas notebook at my elbow, keeping me on track, and a lot of music playing in the background. Music is a very important part of my writing, especially as an aid in the evoking of atmospheric scenes. I suppose that's the normal way of things with my writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy in writing comes from my characters, rather than blistering action or elaborate plotting. Those things are great fun to do, of course... but if you don't care about the characters involved, and the reader doesn't care about them either, then I personally think the overall effect is a little bit lost. I particularly love writing dialogue and conversations, with all those human speech-tics for each character... and I feel driven to make those fun people in my head just a little more real somehow.
What do your fans mean to you, and do you have anything to say to them?
I must say, I don't think I have that many fans yet! If even one person considered themselves to be a fan of mine... well... I'd be quite beside myself! I hope that anyone who downloads my works will get a lot of fun out of them, and that they'll go on the kind of adventures and make the kind of friends only the world of fiction can provide. To anyone reading this, or reading any of my books, you've earned a very big thank you! Have a great day!
