Interview with Gars Méchant

What do your fans mean to you?
Actually, my fans are everything to me. I am constantly blabbing to them on my blog. And I love hearing from them; not just about my writing, but about anything they are thinking about or experiencing.
Hint. ;)
When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a child. I was creating written stories in early grade school. Of course the subject matter was substantially different...
While becoming a published author was a childhood dream of mine, it wasn't until I reached middle-age that I seriously considered adding "Published and Paid Author" to my list of accomplishments.
Now, for the next item on my bucket list...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
That's a huge question, one without a simple answer.
In one way, it was an off-hand comment by an accounting teacher of mine. He said that he expected ebook readers to become the dominant form of reading books because people couldn't see the cover of what you were reading. You could be reading Shakespeare, or you could be reading "Hunky Pool Boy Stories," and nobody can tell the difference. Then "50 Shades of Grey" came out, and largely proved him right.
I had written some adult short stories and published them for free on a website a long time ago, and I started to consider compiling them into a book, and publishing it for Kindle, which was now available to indie authors. Realizing I had no idea how to publish a book by myself, I started to look for information on how to do just that.
Then I started listening to the Self-Publishing Podcast, and I started to think that maybe instead of a single volume of short stories, I actually could become a--gasp!--Novelist!
And without having publishers telling me how to do my job made the whole thing that much more attractive an idea.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to know my characters! They're always surprising me with what they say and do.
In "The Love of the Last Tycoon," F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote: "Writers aren't people exactly. Or, if they're any good, they're a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person." I find that is reasonably accurate. I'll leave it for others to decide if I'm any good or not.
What are you working on next?
A book. ;)
In all seriousness, right now I'm working on a short book about a young college-aged girl who finds out more about her family than she suspected, titled "Diary of a Bed-Hopping Snow Bunny". Yes, the title is ridiculous, and I like it that way. I feel every writer of erotica should have one truly badly conceived book title.
After that, who knows for sure? I have a bunch of titles I would like to work on, including one about a couple's first trip to a company sponsored sex club, tentatively titled "They Said: Executive Masquerade", which will be part of the "They Said..." series of books. Those stories are told from the point of view of at least two of the participants in alternating fashion. After that, I may revise "Tired", and publish the sequel to that book, tentatively titled "On The Rocks", or work on another "They Said..." story tentatively titled "The App" which is about two women that hook up using an app called "HUKR", or possibly another "They Said..." book titled "Tag Team". You'll just have to imagine the plot of that one for now. I also could work on a novel about the dissolution of two long-term relationships, and the forging of two new ones, titled "Seams". Expect that one to be extremely emotional.
However, experience tells me that the order of operations I outlined above will change several times before anything is complete.
What is your writing process?
That's in transition right now. I'm trying to increase my output by switching from being a "pantser," writing my books "by the seat of my pants," to a "plotter," someone who writes to a plan.
All of my published books so far were "pantsed." My current novel, "Raven and June," is inbetween; half made of "pantsed" short stories I published long ago, and half made of material I plotted out recently.
My next novel, "On The Rocks," the sequel to "Tired," is already plotted out, as is "Seams," which should be after that.
After those two, I have an erotic-horror trilogy that is mostly outlined now, and has a TON of supporting material written behind it. I needed the supporting material to make the setting more realistic.
I may publish the supporting material for that trilogy at some point, but only if someone asks me to! ;)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading. Good Lord, I read a lot. Fiction, news, whatever I can.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look at suggestions made by the websites I visit. I look for authors I know. You know, the main ways people find books these days.
How do you approach cover design?
With great fear, intensity, and concentration.
I used to try to keep the characters off the cover of the book. The original versions of the covers for "Educating Goldilocks" and it's sequel, "Extra Credit", showed two hands holding a piece of chalk and writing on a chalkboard. I wanted the readers to have their own idea of what the characters looked like, instead of having it dictated to them by me. The theory being that the reader could read that a character was sexy, and then project their idea of what that meant to them on the character.
That didn't seem to work out in actuality. People seem to want to know what the character looks like before even looking at the description of the story. Every time I have put a person on the cover of a book, with a clear view of their face, that book has sold better.
Who am I to tell the readers what they want?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
When I first decided to self-publish, I expected my books to sell the most copies on Amazon, followed by Barnes & Noble. I decided to try Smashwords because I heard that they made distributing to multiple online retailers easy. And easy is attractive. So, I self-published through Smashwords, then Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing.
I was surprised at the results. I sold more copies directly through Smashwords than all other sites combined.
I believe that is because people coming to Smashwords aren't looking for the latest blockbuster from the best known authors. They're looking for something new from someone they haven't heard of, in genres they are interested in.
And, of course, Smashwords actually promotes books by new authors. It's much easier to stumble across a new author you might like on Smashwords than the major sites.
