Interview with Gary Kuyper

Who are your favorite authors?
Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance and Daniel Keyes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The need to be creative. The need to earn a living. The need for coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Creating artwork and covers for Probe fanzine in photoshop. I also love to play a little 'Skyrim' on the old Xbox!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My club, the SFFSA (Science Fiction and Fantasy South Africa), have many book reviews in their fanzine, Probe.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Of course, I was only twelve at the time, it was a short SF story about the earth passing through the tail of a comet and the dire consequences thereof. I still have a copy of it. Although It is rife with spelling and grammatical errors I believe it may have some potential in the Zombie craze that has now spread like a viral virus. Maybe I should revise and flesh it out into something worthy of a readership.
What is your writing process?
I believe it is a good thing to be open-minded and to try and maintain a good general knowledge.
I look for ideas in all walks of life. Therefore it is necessary to read a lot. Not only fiction but also current affairs.
I love to tell a story with a twist in the tail, so I normally start with the ending and then flesh it out from there.
A couple of my tales have even been inspired by dreams and/or nightmares.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was one of those Jack and Jane books at school - Not very inspiring.
My mother had an extensive collection of the 'Classics Illustrated' series which I absolutely loved.
The titles I really enjoyed were: 'War of the Worlds,' 'The Invisible Man' and 'Frankenstein'.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers using Photoshop. Naturally I look for the most stunning and eye-catching images possible.
We've all heard the saying: 'You can't judge a book by its cover.' But as true as that is, a dull cover will certainly not generate good sales.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
You mean beside my own? Lol!
1. Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes
2. Necronomicon - H. P. Lovecraft
3. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
4. 1984 - George Orwell
5. I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
Describe your desk
Chaotic!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Whether it be the past or the future, I've always found the concept of Time Travel to be intriguing. Through the years I've written a number of short stories on the subject and decided that I had enough to publish them as a collection.
'Time Travellers' is therefore my latest publication.
What are you working on next?
Book 2 of 'The Chronicles of Baltrath.'
It is to be subtitled, 'The Rise of Kith.'
It will be both a prequel and sequel to 'The Dark Wizards.'
My goal will be to ultimately have a trilogy.
