Interview with Madalain Ackley

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love reading as much as writing. I love reading all kinds of genres. I also spend time with my husband just talking or watching television.
What are you working on next?
As of this date, I'm finishing the final draft of book 3 in the Paranormal Shadow series. I'm also putting together the plot for book 4.
Describe your desk
They say a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind. My desk is neither neat or empty. I still make notes on paper so there are scraps and notebooks stacked all around. Pens and pencils can be found if you dig enough. Pictures are tacked on the wall along with more notes that sorta hide the wall calendar. And action figures. I have found they are VERY useful in acting out fight scenes.
What do you read for pleasure?
The genre is subject to change. My favorites are Science Fiction, Sword & Sorcery, Paranormal Romance, Historical Romance, and I also enjoy reading Fanfiction.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have a lot of favorites. In this genre I would say Christine Feehan because she actually introduced me to the paranormal romance genre. Others I enjoy include Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, and Sherrylyn Kenyon. Truth be told, if it sounds interesting I'll pick it up.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling a story and sharing it. My characters are real people to me. Once I tell their story, they stop bothering me. Of course, the moment their voice is silenced, another takes their place to have me tell their story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Impatience. I've sent out manuscripts and query letters and wait months before I received a form letter rejection. I found myself on that endless cycle of editing until I finally realized it had to stop somewhere. I've watched the internet grow and I've become convinced it's a valid and accessible resource for writers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I spent most of my childhood and teen years living in New York City. But I did enough moving that I didn't have many friends. Books were my escape when things got bad. I would read a book and then imagine what would happen next. Or I would place myself within the story and imagine it going in a different direction.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
According to my mother, the first story I wrote was about a red dog named Spot. She said I was four at the time.
When did you first start writing?
According to my mother, I've been writing since I was about four. I've always loved reading and often books would spark my imagination and made me ask the question "What if...". I really can't remember a time when I wasn't writing fiction in my life.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Usually my brain refusing to stop thinking. It works on story ideas while I sleep and I have to get up and get it written down somewhere before I forget.
