Interview with Geof Warren

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This seems an odd question because why would I want to stay in bed all day? I get up because I want to, if there is not work to go to, there are always things to do. What I do like to when I don't have to get going, is just to get my breakfast and sit in bed and listen to Jeremy Vine (Radio 2) on the iplayer. This keeps me in touch with what is going on back in Blighty.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Teaching, sometimes preparing for the same. Like to watch a good movie when I can get one. Play badminton with friends when I can. Walk in nearby Red Army Mountain. Go out for a meal with friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly I always know of them in advance but sometimes I might come across one on Amazon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first writing was a way of expressing my frustrations and worries. I don't remember ever writing as a child.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process, I just sit down and write. It is easy for me to write but it is the editing which takes the time. Always can find something I want to change.
How do you approach cover design?
First I start looking at lots of pictures hoping to get inspiration. I go through istock photos, so much to choose from there. I got a great photo for my book Not To Blame and then got a Chinese girl to paint it for me. She did a great job and the original now hangs on my wall. If someone asks me about the picture it is a great intro for my book. For my book Centre of the Universe I wanted to design the cover myself and used a background which I created from a picture on Paint.net It's actually a picture of a girl but you would never know.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle - really helped me to rearrange my thinking
Mind Power - John Kehoe - Good sound advice and instruction
Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank - such a powerful and sad story; what an amazing young lady - if only she could have lived.
The Tao of Pooh - Benjamin Hoff - wise words from a simple bear
Trafficked, Diary of a Sex Slave - we all need reminding of such terrible things and one day hope to help.
What do you read for pleasure?
I think every I read gives me pleasure, otherwise I won't read it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My smart phone, so convenient to carry around and even use in bed.
Describe your desk
Cluttered!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small market town in Kent, England. My life has influenced my writing. I speculate that if I had never lost my mother when I was one year, whether I would have been so curious about life and demanding to know why I felt the way I did, and started writing when I did.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Not To Blame is my latest book which came to me while I was having an extended stay in Nepal and with plenty of time on my hands. I had been reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and seeking to find answers to certain questions. Trying to understand life and why we are the way we are. I've also just published Centre of the Universe, a collection of verses which I've had stored on my computer for too many years. Discovering Smashwords made me realise that I should finally publish them and that I could.
