Interview with Gillian Kathrik

What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy anything. In fact when I was young I started with short stories then novels. My reading library is huge! I can't go over it all at once! :D But yeah, I really enjoy reading and each day, it teaches me something new! :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer my laptop, in which I download or buy e books and examine them at my own leisure. I am not into gadgets and all much.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have been marketing via Facebook, Google+ and a whole load of other sites too. I think Facebook is helping me out loads more than other engines.
Describe your desk
Haha! :P Well, it's cluttered as a writers' always is. I have my pen holder with a dozen or so pens and my rough draft before me. It's often hours before I realise I have to work and leave my working space to go find something else to do!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Well, I grew up in Pakistan. I completed my O' Levels in Year 2013 and a year before that, I had already started writing. Basically, no one actually in my family is so much into writing. So I was a bit like a laughing stock when I decided to go for it. :P But yeah, this is something I always wanted to do. My greatest inspiration? My family and yes a few more people. I dedicate my work to them. They've stuck with me through every high and low point.
When did you first start writing?
I had been writing for several years now. My first work was a short story in a children magazine when I was eight. I wrote poetry, and I really liked to. Then things changed and I finally started with a full fledged novel at the age of fifteen, in 2012.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is simple. Not a very difficult or complicated plot. It's basically about Friendship, love and revenge. There's a bit of romance but it's not too unhealthy. Lol! :D Anyways, I hope my readers do enjoy it and feel free to leave me a review on this site. That's going to be great!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Ah, yes. That's a difficult one. I lived in a place where obviously,, writing was rare. Looking for publishing houses is both demanding and exhausting. Plus you can't be sure who to trust. And I am not that popular yet to be published without any intro. Therefore I opted for Indie publishing. It's pretty fun. But obviously, we need help from our fans too! :)
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great site and has helped me a lot. I just hope I am able to reach my desired goal with this site! Thanks a lot. :)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing, I would like to tell you, for me is more of a passion. I did not start writing to reap rewards, more like I knew I had the talent and put it to paper. I love writing. It's a feeling like no other. It's an obsession. Well, you should ask my mom. She is half the time, mad at me because I won't give it a rest. But I love her.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think, fans are always the reason, the inspiration which keeps moving you, motivating you for more. I love all my fans and hope they feel the same way about me. :) It would be great if they would leave me reviews for my book on this site and others too! And by the way guys, thanks for all your help. And LOVE YOU FOREVER! <3
What are you working on next?
Well, I am working on two novels at the same time so can't be sure which one would come out sooner. But these ones, I am writing in collaboration with a fellow author.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh yeah. I like classics so Henry James and Jane Austen are like my top favourites! As for now, I prefer J.K Rowling and Cecelia Ahern. I have a few more but these are the top ones.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Hahah! :P Everyday is new... A fresh start. The greatest motivation is that I have a chance to do something great today. It's often accompanied by a quick thanks to My Lord for letting me live another day. And that's what I think of before I get up.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am officially a student at the moment as some of you would have noticed. So writing can't be given a lot of my time. It's mostly studies, household chores, and lots of other stuff. Writing in mostly in my free time. Or as in vacations.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, as a matter of fact I do! It was a fable. About an eagle and a falcon. And how they managed to defend themselves from approaching danger. I loved that tale and years later, I still do.
What is your writing process?
Well, it's kind of weird. I make a rough draft and then I sit to get it typed. The funny part is, I keep adding stuff in the middle so that when it's done it is completely changed. *shrugs* Well, I know I am a bit different.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
For that matter, I can't answer. I have been reading from the age of three and definitely do not remember what I read. But all the same, I am sure it had a pleasant impact on me. Reading always does! <3
How do you approach cover design?
I have a friend, or should I say, my sister. She's a few years senior to me and has this completely awesome sense of graphic designs. So I attribute my awesome book covers to her. And in case she's reading this, I want to tell her that I love her a lot and that she might be away from me but always with me in my heart. And my brother too.
