What's the story behind your latest book?
Last summer, a few days after the big news that Homer and Marge Simpson were getting a divorce after 26 years of marriage, a reporter from the Huffington Post called to interview me. You see, he saw my Five Ways to Jazz Up Your Marriage (2014) press release and wanted to know what advice I would give them. I mentioned a few things, but I told him that the divorce rate of couples married for 20+ years has doubled in the past 15 years, and divorces were actually on the rise within that demographic. There were several reasons why, but the main trend seemed to be that marriages in their post-honeymoon stage start drifting apart rather than drawing closer during years 5-15, even as early as year 3 and as late as year 20. That is why I decided to address this social phenomenon and fight to encourage, educate, and empower couples towards their dream marriage to reverse this terrible trend.

I believe that at the root of this epidemic is the reversal of priorities and focus of the couple. When a couple is dating, engaged, and newly married, their priority and focus is each other. So much time and emotional energy is used by spending time together to develop their relationship. But once the honeymoon stage lapses, the focus and priorities gradually switch from each other to the accumulation of things, developing careers, and raising children. So now, everything and everyone else becomes more important than the spouse. The mindset (or deception) is that all of these endeavors are for the benefit of the family. Now, if the couple continues to invest in their marriage while developing their future, that would be great, but more often than not, there is an extended period of time when the spouse and their marriage relationship gets all of the leftovers and eventually starves to death... literally! By the time children start leaving the nest, the couple has drifted apart and "fallen out of love." This is when we marriage professionals get the last resort calls to help save their marriage. By this time, however, couples are so hurt and angry, that short of a miracle, they will become another sad statistic.

Reboot Your Marriage: Go from BLAH to BLISS in 30 Days! is committed to provide hope and help for couples in the 3-20 year range to re-energize and realign their marriage in order to go from BLAH to BLISS and then help them NOT go from BLISS to BLAH again!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
1. I am a Marriage Coach. Just like a marriage counselor, I meet with couples and coach them towards their goals. Because I utilize video conferencing, I can coach couples all over the world! It's so convenient because they don't have to get ready, drive in traffic to my office, then return home after our session. A 60 minutes session is done in 60 minutes! I do have a limit of clients I can meet with in a week, so please be patient.
2. I am a Husband. I honestly enjoy hanging out with my wife of 37 years. We like doing life together and look forward to these next couple of years because of exciting things going on with our daughter's family's lives. Speaking of which...
3. I am a Father & Grandfather. Even though my daughter is grown, married, and has a growing family, we see them regularly since they live in San Diego too. We are involved in our grand children's activities. Love this stage in life!!
4. I am a Friend. You'll catch me on the golf course once in a while with friends from our small group bible study group, which I get a chance to lead occasionally. I enjoy coaching our group on how to live a life that makes God smile. Carlyn and I also enjoy meeting with other couples over dinner or just coffee.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I'm not a person that reads books for enjoyment. I've always thought of reading as a chore, so when I read, it has to teach me something or help improve my life somehow. so I gravitate towards Christian non-fiction books. Some of my favorites are:
1. The Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren. I really like this book because it covers the basics of the Christian life in a devotional style - daily short readings, but biblically sound and 'purposeful'.
2. The Book of Ephesians, by the Apostle Paul. Isn't this a chapter in the bible? No, actually, the bible is a compilation of 66 books, and Ephesians is one of them in the New Testament. It's my favorite because is emphasizes the benefits of being a believer in Jesus, and then outlines very practical things on how to relate well with a variety of people.
3. Experiencing God, by Henry Blackaby & Claude King. This is a book that really shaped my Christian walk in the 90's. It reinforced a lot of truths I believed in, and yet challenged how I implemented them. I should read this again!
4. The Trivialization of God, by Donald McCullough. This was another book that helped give my belief system a boost in the 90's as well. The subtitle says it all... "The dangerous illusion of a manageable deity." I need to re-read this one too!
5. Finishing Strong, by Steve Farrar. Now that I've been a Christian for over 30 years, I know that it's challenging to stay faithful and go the distance. I've seen men and women I looked up to and respected trip and fall from the faith - some bouncing back and others struggling until now. But my goal in life is to finish strong!
