Interview with Glynnis Campbell

Published 2019-05-21.
When did you first start writing?
My first creative writing happened as soon as I could hold a pencil. In Kindergarten I was writing little poems about my cat, and all through school, I filled notebooks full of poetry and lyrics. It wasn't until I was an adult that I tried writing a book. It was so long, it ended up being three books, and a decade later, they became my first published books--My Champion, My Warrior, and My Hero.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In elementary school, I wrote a medieval story that was actually more of a picture book. I brazenly traced figures out of Disney books and the encyclopedia and wrote an adventure that featured an unbeknownst-to-me international cast--Pedro, Jacques, King Arthur, and Prince Philip.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the now famous Paradise, California--the town that was tragically destroyed by fire. Three of my historical romances are set there in the 1800s, so the land and history had a direct effect on my writing. But my early childhood was spent in the parkland of nearby Chico, which stood in for Sherwood Forest in the Errol Flynn film, "Robin Hood." From an early age, that romantic setting made me very interested in all things medieval--woodland outlaws, knights in shining armor, and swashbuckling heroes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The scent of freshly brewing coffee is a pretty good wake-up for me! But even when I have to make it myself, I'm eager to go online to read the news, see what my readers have posted, and make my own daily post--usually a fun question and a link to one of my weekly giveaways of a signed book.
Describe your desk
My writing desk is very different from my work desk. My work desk is a double-sided cherry wood behemoth with ceiling-high shelves and cupboards. But when I write, I do it on my laptop, which means my desk can be anywhere. My favorite desk locations are on a cruise ship with my BFF author Lauren Royal and on my musician husband's bus when I'm tagging along on a tour.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my smartphone. It's so nice to have a whole library tucked into my pocket, especially since most of my reading happens in spare moments here and there.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read everything under the sun! I love biographies and thrillers, historical romances and how-to books, books of essays and collections of short fiction, quirky novels and beloved classics. For me, reading is like going on a little vacation, and I'm a vacationer who would travel to Paris one week and camp in the wilderness the next. So variety is what I crave when I read.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was a traditionally published author for ten years, writing under three pen names, and on my birthday, my agent called to tell me my publisher didn't want any more books from me. Happy birthday. I thought my career was over. But only a few years later, ebooks came on the market, and because my publisher didn't see the value in them, I got the rights back to all my previously published books. I was able to successfully publish and market them myself. It turned out to be the best birthday gift ever!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I like to feed the muse with books and binge-watching. I especially enjoy Ted Talks. But I also love the outdoors--bicycling, gardening, traveling all over. Several times a year, I tag along with my musician husband on part of his tour, and though I write a good deal of the time, I also love hanging out with the band and socializing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Every reader has their favorite platform, and some of the earliest adopters of ebook technology came to Smashwords. Smashwords has spent a lot of time and energy to create a user-friendly and industry-current platform, building great relationships with marketers and distributors.
What do your fans mean to you?
My readers are the wind beneath my wings. I delight in sharing my characters' emotions and adventures, and I love hearing back from fans who laughed or cried or stayed up all night reading one of my books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm very excited to be writing a sequel to my most popular series, "The Warrior Maids of Rivenloch." The new series is called "The Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch," and Book 1 is BRIDE OF FIRE. As the series title suggests, these are the romantic adventures of the original sisters' daughters. The three intrepid cousins prove that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as they cross blades and break hearts in the Lowlands of Scotland!
What is your writing process?
There are generally two types of writers--plotters and pantsters. Plotters outline everything and follow a road map. Pantsters write by the seat of their pants. it turns out I'm a planster. I start with a rough outline of what I want to happen, but often the characters shove me out of the way and start down their own path. I used to fight them. I know better now. I just revise my expectations and my outline, and somehow it works out.
How do you approach cover design?
The most important element for me in the cover design, aside from clearly identifying the genre, is the emotion represented. I prefer having people on my covers, and since my books are romantic and adventurous, I like a bit of drama in the artwork. I always choose my own photos, and my husband creates most of my covers. My name logo at the bottom ties together all my books, and if the book is Scottish, which many of mine are, I try to include a bit of tartan. I'm always looking for new trends. (In fact, I was one of the first authors to put solo heroines on historical romance covers!)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's the best feeling when, after I've spent several months pouring out my heart onto the pages of a book--loving and laughing and crying with the characters, struggling with the heroine, and snuggling with the hero--I start to receive enthusiastic reviews from readers who were swept away, riding with me on the adventure!
