Interview with Gordon Rupe

What do you read for pleasure?
To relax, I like to read poetry. I am a big fan of Shakespeare, Frost, Yeats and of course Poe.
Describe your desk
My desk is a vast wasteland of everything. I have pens, paper, toys, etc. I have no idea what is on my desk half of the time.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Oakland California. The time I grew up in was a violent one. When I was attending high school, we were the murder capitol for 3/4 years straight. I think that has an influence as far as why I like true crime.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I got really tired of waiting for other people to keep promises. I decided that if I wanted it done, I had to do it myself. People (on the outside) think that you just send someone a book and it ends up at a books store. That isn't how it works. You have to go through plenty of empty people to get a book published, so, I just skipped the middle man so to speak.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The research. When all is said and done I walk away from a project and I have learned from it. When I wrote my book on John Wilkes Booth, I learned tons of information about the Civil War itself. These were things I had not known before and because of that project, I am a better person for it.
What do your fans mean to you?
I LOVE interacting with my fans. Through e-mail or podcasts or what have you. They read what I have offered them and in return, they give me a point of view on my work that I hadn't had or even considered.
What is your writing process?
Well, it depends on if it is fiction or not. If it is fiction, then I write my 'treatment' and then go from there. I try to leave room for what I call 'Improv moments' - That is to say I have an outline, but, I also leave room for throwing things in that the audience may not expect.

If I am writing non-fiction, the research is key. I do as much as I can and try to be as detailed as I can. In non-fiction, you are writing about a person, so, you have to do them justice.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend tons of time with my Wife, Kim and my Son.
I play a lot of x-box games - with or without my son.
I am an avid chess player, so my neighbor and I will play chess if and when time allows.
How would you describe your fanbase?
I don't think I can. They are such a diverse group of people. I get people who love true crime or conspiracy theories, but, I also get people who love my erotica books.
I get e-mails from people from all walks of life and I think that is how a writer should be and not be monogamous to one genre or another.
How do you approach cover design?
My covers are designed by my Wife, Kim. It is kind of funny, I tell her what I want and what the book is about and she comes up with an idea and that is usually my cover. Very rarely do I ask her to re-do a cover, she just knows what I want. In some instances I have an exact picture in my head, I describe it to her and POOF.....
