Interview with Gowtham Gurunath

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I still do remember my first story. It was back when i was in my school. A short horror story which was almost funny because I don't recall the story having any horror elements at all.
What is your writing process?
I usually don't think of an entire story and twists and all. I use to frame a small plot from which i build as i write. Things eventually gets build up as I write. Sometimes i may have thought something different but as i start writing I get new ideas.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I used to read a lot of novels and i liked every single one of them as i carefully choose them and read, but the first story that made an impact on me was "One Shot" by Lee Child. A well developed and planned script without even a minor loop holes, in fact it was one of my inspirations that led me to the writing of "The Discrete Hit", a sniper related thriller. Ever since Lee child was included in my "Favorite Authors" list.
How do you approach cover design?
I haven't really published many novels, so haven't given a thought about it. If you like the book cover of "The Discreet Hit", for your info, it's my own design. I usually make book covers and posters by my own, at least until now i guess.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This question is like, "placing few identical apples with identical taste and asking, 'Pick five apples with a god taste'.'" All the novels i read produces a different impact on me. Each book has its own uniqueness. So as a reader, i can't really choose among various books.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a man of Crime/Suspense/Thriller/Mystery. Most of my library are filled with these Genres. A few includes horror and comedy and romance. I usually prefer these categories [Horror, Comedy & Romance] to watch in screens, which are much more interesting than reading. I don't have the faintest idea, how a horror story can scare you, unless you watch it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't do much of e-reading, which is an irony, because I've been publishing only e-books. I do read some, in e-books while on travel, so i usually prefer my smart phones. Nothing else comes in handy than my own personal device.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing only a few years back, but each time when i start writing - I usually write around three - four pages and finally those writings will end up in the garbage. I'm not easily satisfied, because I believe in a different class of writing, some next level stuffs. So after giving up for a long time, i took some time and efforts and finally initiated the writing of "The Discreet Hit", and here I am.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
From the place where i grew up, its not so easy to get a recognition for a novel, because the % of book reading people from my region is less comparing other countries. So, i needed a good platform to publish my e-book. Since I just graduated college i couldn't afford to literally publish a book. I was looking for a free publishing site and that's when i came to know about "Smashwords".
What do your fans mean to you?
They are everything & I can count on them always. Encouragement of fans are like a power boosted energy drink for a writer.
What are you working on next?
My next work is kind of an Archaeological thriller / adventure. So i'm doing some study and research about it. That's all i can say now. See for yourself when it releases. If you are a fan of adventurous mystery, then you'll definitely love it.
