Interview with Grace James

What are you working on next?
I'm working on an MMA fighter romance right now. It's probably the darkest thing I've written so far. I'm completely in love with the main characters. They're killing me a little bit - but in a good way!
Describe your desk
Cluttered! It's full of notebooks, drafts that I've printed off and scribbled notes on, random toys that have been deposited there for reasons I've forgotten...right now, there's a Troll head on my printer.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to publish my books right away. I didn't want to wait around to see if a publisher picked them up because I thought I'd probably lose my nerve all together! Also, I love the freedom that being an Indie author gives me, and I like editing my own works too. It's a big feeling of achievement to be able to say you have complete ownership.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to let my imagination run wild. When I write a first draft, anything goes. You can explore the darkest parts of your characters and just immerse yourself in their world.
What is your writing process?
It would probably make most authors wince in horror.
I start out by just writing the scenes that pop into my head - I usually don't have any fixed 'destination' in mind at that point, I just focus on the characters. As I write more though, I find that the plot crystallises around the scenes that I've written.
Then I just kind of jigsaw it all together and fill in the gaps by working through the draft chronologically.
It sounds like a messy process, but I swear it works!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk - I love his writing style because it's simple and conversational, but his ideas are complex.
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis - this book is so messed up - I love it! But, again, writing style is a big thing for me, and Ellis makes you feel like you're actually listening to Bateman.
1984 by George Orwell - it's a classic for a reason! "Do it to Juliiaaaaaaaaa!"
I'm going to have to pick series for the last two because I can't narrow it down to one book each:
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King - it's just phenomenal, and the way that so many of his other works are linked to this narrative blows my mind. It's like King has a whole alternate universe in his brain.
The Sandman (graphic novel) series by Neil Gaiman - full of uncomfortable truths about humanity presented in a cascade of messed up awesomeness.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire and I use the Kindle app on my phone, that way I can switch between the two without losing my place.
