Interview with Bob Oedy

What made you want to write a book about Las Vegas?
My girlfriend and I had just left the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino on our way home after Punk Rock Bowling. We were talking about how much fun we had bowling, seeing all the bands and going to the pool parties. We did a lot of other things too like visiting China Town, Pawn Star's Pawnshop, discovering great restaurants. We thought someone should write a book explaining how to navigate the perfect Las Vegas stay. That's when the idea hit me, "The Punk Rock Las Vegas Survival Guide". My band The Grim played the festival before, I bowled in the tournament, I've attended as a single person and with kids. I thought it would be fun to introduce people to the subject. Most of my friends never venture off to see things like Kiss Monster Mini Golf, Pinball Hall-of-Fame or Flamingo Wildlife Habitat. There are so many free or inexpensive things to do in Las Vegas.
What did you learn writing this book?
I didn't realize there were so many punk bowling leagues out there; Nardcore Bowling, Ska/Punk Bowling, SLO Bowling, LA Gutter Punx, etc... I interviewed them all and put the information in the book.
How did you choose the cover design for The Punk Rock Las Vegas Survival Guide?
The cover photo is a classic example of old school punk influence. It reminds me of Uma Thurman's iconic Pulp Fiction pose mixed with a little Rodney On The ROQ 80's artistic influence. First we wanted to find a true punk rock model, she needed to have ties to the bowling community and music scene. She needed to have a certain old-school look; beautiful but vulnerable. That's why we opted for a model with no tattoos. The fact that Summer had blue hair and a matching bowling ball was an added bonus. It turns out she was a friend of a friend on Facebook and bowled at Ska/Punk Bowling in Arizona. Angela Rosered was in charge of the photo shoot and was able to capture the look we wanted. Of all my books this cover is by far my favorite. We get a lot of compliments on it.
Why have you chosen May 23rd to release the printed version?
While the ebook is available now we've decided to release the print version on the first day of the Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival in Las Vegas. My band The Grim is scheduled to play the Kick-Off Party with Poison Idea and The Freeze at The Backstage Bar and Billiards. The show sold out in less than 1 hour. There's a lot of excitement over this year's events. It's going to be great! We will also have a Merch Booth all 3 days of the festival were the book will be available. Each printed book includes 10 free stickers from various punk bands, is printed union and manufactured in the United States. I'll be there to promote the book and provide advice to readers on how to save money and have the most fun in Las Vegas.
Do people really need a book to have fun in Las Vegas?
My answer is yes definitely. You only have a limited amount of time and you want to experience all that Las Vegas has to offer; the shows, bowling, pool parties, casinos, attractions. Know the difference between an attraction and a distraction. Don't get ripped off at some bogus Las Vegas tourist trap or overcharged at some mediocre restaurant. Las Vegas has the best of everything! There's no need to settle for ok. My book answers the toughest questions. How can you cut your beer costs in half? Should you bring your ex? Where can you find the best chili dog in town? The best ice cream? The best foot massage? Where to save on ATM fees? Where can a guy swim with live sharks and not get eaten? And what kind of free memorabilia can you get your hands on to help offset the cost of your trip? It's all in my book, but if you don't read it you won't know.
How does the print version of The Punk Rock Las Vegas Survival Guide differ from the ebook?
The print version is published by Union Organizer Press. It comes with 10 stickers from various punk rock bands, each book is signed and numbered, it's more expensive, printed union of course and manufactured in the United States of America. We offer both because some people prefer the feel of a printed book while others like the savings ebooks offer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing gives me an opportunity to focus on topics of interest. In The Punk Rock Las Vegas Survival Guide not only was I able to write about my favorite destination Las Vegas but also the bands I love to listen to. Bands like False Confession, Implants, Glue Gun, Sorry State, Graveyard Bandits, Night Demon, Jughead's Revenge, Unglued, Harmful If Swallowed, Whitekaps, Dead Lazlo's Place, Killroy, Bad Samaritans don't get enough attention. Writing allows me to put the spotlight on these great musicians and bring them to the public's attention.
How did you choose who to dedicate the book to?
I dedicated the book to my late friend Jim Cherry from Strung Out, Pulley and Zero Down. He was a great musician, a great person and one of my earliest supporters. He inspired me to keep writing and performing. Jim was the right choice because many of the people reading my book remember him as well. My earlier books were dedicated to Mom and Dad and my late childhood best friend Eric Adler.
What are you working on next?
There are several writing projects in the works and my band The Grim will be performing at Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas with Poison Idea and The Freeze. Now that the book is written the focus is on promoting it and getting it in the hands of people who are willing to review it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I wish there was more time for writing. I'm in the top one percent of union organizers in the world so the majority of my time is spent meeting with workers and helping them gain a voice in their workplace. I'm a single dad, in two bands and I'm active in Toastmasters.
How does your latest writing compare to your previous books?
My newest book is a complete departure from previous texts. It's a Las Vegas travel guide for punks. It's full of information for people who want to get the most out of their Punk Rock Bowling vacation. My previous books are also non-fiction but are self help, career oriented subjects. My first book is titled Bigger Labor; a crash course for construction union organizers. My second book is The Green Career Ladder; a step-by-step guide to profitable careers in sustainable energy. All my books are designed to help people in some way but my latest is a lot more entertaining.
