Interview with Gabriella Veliz

What is your writing process?
I basically write down whatever pops into my head. Sometimes I write it one way, but if I come up with something better, I rewrite it. Sometimes my stories come from dreams I've had before, or they just form when I'm just thinking or when I'm bored and trying to entertain myself.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My very first story was Dr. Suess' "Green Eggs and Ham." It was a story I never wanted to stop reading. When I was little, it would always make me laugh, and it still does whenever I look back at it for old times' sake.
How do you approach cover design?
I am not coordinated with computer designs. But, I am good at sketching on paper. I currently have some designs for covers for the first two books for a new series I've been working on since I was sixteen.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Because it features a young boy who is learning more about his skills as a wizard and having a happier life in this new world he's discovered he is from.
2. Treasure Island: It has daring and exciting adventure.
3. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: This story introduces a magical world of adventure and mystery.
4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: It features the story of young Harry Potter who discovers he is more than meets the eye. He learns he is a powerful and famous wizard, and meets new friends while on his journey.
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: It is filled with adventure and suspense that makes me never want to put the book down.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I sometimes read fanfictions online, but for books, I only read physical ones because they don't cause me headaches unlike the computer when I use it for too long.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy and Adventure stories. Fiction I like best because, what's the fun in reading books about stuff that has really happened? Fictional stories help me escape the dullness of reality.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Los Angeles, California. My writing was merely influenced by the inspiration I got from reading the books written by many famous authors like J.K. Rowling, Mary Shelley, Nora Roberts, Kierra Kass, and so many others.
When did you first start writing?
When I was eight years old. At age six, I could only make up stories. I was still learning how to write proper sentences.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book that I am still working on is the third story in a series I've been writing about six girls who grew up in the city, until one day they learn they are magical guardians to a hidden kingdom that had been taken over by an evil tyrant many years ago. The third story involves a love story, a lost royal descendant, and the reappearance of a kingdom that had disappeared for two hundred years when it was invaded by a dark sorcerer.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading a book, listening to music, relaxing, dancing, singing, watching cartoons, drawing, or playing with my dog
