Interview with Gwen Rickman

What motivated you to become an indie author?
A change in career threw me into the world of the incarcerated. After retiring from the California Dept. of Corrections I found an interest in writing about those individuals who were normally out of sight and out of mind from society. There are many stories to be told about my experiences while walking among and communicating with the people behind the lethal electric fence.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I found that Smashwords gives me another resource to market my books. Just getting started so "success" is just around the corner.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me. As an unknown author, I am willing to take corrective criticism and appreciate kudos.
What are you working on next?
My main focus is promoting my first three books. I am an unknown author to many and getting my name out to those who appreciate mystery thrillers is important. I am researching for my next novel. While my stories are fictional, they are based on factual events in and outside the prison environment.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like a variety! J.D. ROBB, Nora Roberts, Dean Koontz, Patricia Cromwell, Michael Crichton, Lisa Jackson, Jonathan Kellerman, Robin Cook, Jean M. Auel and many others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life itself! My husband and I are retired and we look at each day as a new adventure.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Traveling, bowling, kayaking, keeping up to date with our son and daughter, and socializing with friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short story about a an accident I had while rafting a river. I wrote it as a therapeutic cathartic to my life threatening experience.
What is your writing process?
Remembering the experience or observation I personally witnessed while working in a maximum security prison and involving the characters I've chosen from the first and second book.
How do you approach cover design?
As a message from the theme of my story.
