Interview with Haley Allison

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband, son, cat, and dog who all need eight hundred different things from me as soon as they wake up. I also love my jobs. Designing graphics for books and writing are both passions that I can't wait to get started on when I get up in the morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love walking out in the country where I live. Sometimes I'll be walking my dog and/or pushing my son on his tricycle (which thankfully has a Mommy-height handle so I don't break my back). I also love nature photography and playing World of Warcraft.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover a lot of great books and authors through Facebook. Ads, groups, and word of mouth have all led me to amazing stories and the people who write them. I also find some great reads while scrolling through recommended books on Amazon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was the story of my own life. It was right after my maternal grandfather passed away. I wrote about how he inspired me for an English assignment. I started writing fiction soon after that, and I've been writing ever since.
What is your writing process?
I follow these steps every time I write:
1. Brainstorm
2. Outline
3. Rough Draft (sometimes skipping scenes and leaving a short description in brackets - thanks Veronica Roth for that tip!)
4. Second Draft (third, fourth, etc. if needed)
5. Send to beta readers
6. Edit/revise
7. Send to proofreader
8. Publish

I love waking up early in the morning when everybody else is sleeping and writing so I have no distractions. Early morning quiet is the best quiet. Sometimes, if I have a really strict deadline, I'll go to a coffee shop and sip some tea or coffee and eat a pastry while I write.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers. I also create my own ads, teasers, bookmarks, and more. My company is Spellbound Cover Design. To me, a great cover needs to catch the reader's eye and tell the story before they even see Page 1. I try to make my covers relevant, yet beautiful.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love contemporary romance, young adult, dystopian, and fantasy books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read books on my iPhone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Sales and freebies are excellent for getting the word out about your novel. It's also important to have a newsletter with lots of subscribers. I'm still working on building my list.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the southeastern region of the US, which is where I base a lot of my novels. The culture is unique and there are a lot of good people down here. We also have the best food. Ever. My main characters are typically sweet Southern girls who can break out the sass.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love having complete creative control. I can design my own covers and publish my books however I want. There's a lot to be said for having creative freedom and making the most of it. I love my fellow indies and try to help out whenever I can. It's an awesome community!
