Interview with Haley Langwood

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing a story in 2012. The book that I started is still on my 'still to finish' shelf.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I spend my time mainly with my two dogs and reading. I love to talk my dogs for long walks and spend time in the garden. Well, sitting on the deck, mostly and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh, yes, I do. Unfortunately, that story isn't finished, yet. I need to stay connected to the characters. Sometimes I lose that connection and then I'm stuck. So, that's why the story is on the shelf since 2012.
What is your writing process?
I don't know. The story pops into my head and then I have to write it down. After I start a story, I see where the characters take me. So, there isn't really a writing process. At least, it doesn't feel like there is one. Sometimes the end of a story swirls in my head, but then the story ends different. With me, you never know!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
That's a tough one. Let me think. Ah, yes. The Shannara Series, by Terry Brooks. It was all in paperback, though. It's nice to remember again. The story had not much of an impact on me, but I loved the whole series. I think I will grab the series from the attic and curl up on my comfy couch and start reading the books again.
How do you approach cover design?
That's an easy one. I start with the characters. Then, the background and after that, I fill in the rest. The cover will change so many times, before I like it. The cover of Julian, the first book in the Grapevines & Skyscrapers series, changed about eight times, I believe. I do my own cover design and i'm really proud of that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I can't name five books because I love series. So, I will name the series I really love.

I love Harry Potter because as soon as I start reading those books, I forget about everything else, there's only Harry Potter. The Adrien English Series by Josh Lanyon. The Art of Murder Series also by Josh Lanyon. Finally, A Matter of Time Series by Mary Calmes.

That's four series and more than five books. :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I own a Kindle Paperwhite. That's the best option for reading in bed without disturbing my hubby.
Describe your desk
Oh, oh ... Let's say that a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind. :) My desk is a mess because I like it that way. I need to be comfortable when I'm writing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a big city in the Netherlands. I don't think that it is influencing my writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
There isn't really one. I wanted to write a story which had romance and suspension in it. Since I love Italy, decide to start with the little village called Cannobio. That's where I spend my three-weeks vacation. Like I said before, a story pops up into my head and I go from there. That is how the story came about. I really go where the characters are taking me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
That's a simple question. I like to decide what I write and how I write it. I'm someone who always made her own rules and that didn't change when I started writing stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, I published my first book at Smashwords. I learned so much by reading the Smashwords Style Guide, and watch Mark explaining things on YouTube. Also, I learned to make a decent doc file in Word. My first book passed Meatgrinder and AutoVetter with flying colors. I designed the cover of my first book, and I will continue to do so with the books that follow.

For now, I'm concentrating on the promotion of my first book for which Smashwords has good tips.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I don't know exactly. It feels good to express myself, and when people like my stories that would be the icing on the cake.
What are you working on next?
Right now, I'm working on two stories. Book two in the Grapevines & Skyscrapers Series. Plus I'm working on a Christmas story.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dan Brown, Josh Lanyon, Mary Calmes, J.K Rowling and Anne Rice.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It's simple, I love my life and that's reason enough to get out of bed each morning. I try to make the most of every day. Not that I always succeed, but it's pretty close. :)
