Interview with Harper Kingsley

What do you read for pleasure?
I mostly read science fiction and fantasy. I like military sci-fi ala David Drake and S.M. Stirling. I'm a big fan of L.E. Modesitt, Jr, C.J. Cherryh, Terry Pratchett, and Wen Spencer. Books like Dune, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, and Comfort & Joy have had a big effect on me as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire, though I'm hoping to upgrade to an HDX if someone is nice enough to gift me with one :P
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was in the second grade. There was this class assignment for parents' night where we were all supposed to write a fairy tale story. Mine was about a girl trapped by a witch in a castle made of thorns.

I don't really remember the story itself so much, but I remember the feeling I got when it was all done and I was looking at the picture I drew for the cover. I was so proud of myself that I never wanted to forget that feeling. So I kept on writing more and more stories because it felt good.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Shyness. Seriously, I talk big on the Internet, but I'm actually very shy. I don't like putting myself out there so much and the risk of rejection makes my stomach hurt. So I self-pubbed a book, and I found out that I liked it.

There's something nice about maintaining control of story and having all the options about where it's going to be displayed and how it's going to be read. Plus if there's any mistakes, I like that I can go back through and fix them with a new version.
What is your writing process?
I have several different processes, and it depends on the type of story I'm writing.

For some I just go with the flow. I start with the first chapter and let the story take me where it will. It's fun because I don't quite know where the story is going to end up and it's like I'm reading it while I'm writing. It's very spontaneous, though it can sometimes backfire if I get caught on a scene and lose my forward momentum. I have a lot of half-finished works on my computer that I don't know what to do with because I don't know how they end.

For other stories, I write chapter-by-chapter outlines that sketch out everything that's going to happen. In some ways, that's the best way for me to write because it's fast, there's no real surprises, and knowing what's supposed to happen and what's going to come next keeps me moving forward.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I love that people read and enjoy the stories I write. I love hearing from someone that they like a world I've created or a particular character. I like knowing that someone is getting as much enjoyment out of reading a book I've written as I had writing it.

It's humbling and strange, but it's awesome too. I love my fans.
