Interview with Jean Page

What do you read for pleasure?
I read mostly science fiction and fantasy novels. I have a few authors that I wait on their new publications and will read anything they write, but I am always looking for new material. I joined a local book club to open myself up to books I might not otherwise pick myself and the result has been quite enjoyable.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Do You Love Me, Harvey Burns? by Jean Marzollo. It's a teen novel and the first book I ever took the time to read. It really was the reason I continued to read, and eventually to write.
Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey. I spent many years writing fanfiction for Pern, so I really feel like this is where I began to hone my craft. I adore a world where dragons aren't the 'bad guy' but rather the heroes of the tale.
Emma by Jane Austen. The emotions are so strong for me in this story of romance and love, that the characters leave me feeling quite breathless.
Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett I can re-read this book and every time I do, I giggle out loud. The imagery is comedic and wonderful.
Gone Girl By Gillian Flynn What can I say but OMG!! This book had me second guessing everything all the way through, and the suspense was amazing!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the mountains of Wyoming, where you can still go outside on a summer night and see a heaven full of stars. How did it influence my writing? I'd have to say it is much easier to hear the voices in my head in the peace an quiet of mother's backyard than it is in any city. They tend to shout less too.
When did you first start writing?
I was a freshman in high school when I discovered the desire to write stories. When others were taking notes in science class, I would often be filling notebook pages with conversations between teen-aged characters. I still have that notebook somewhere.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle, but I have to say I've never tried anything else.
Describe your desk
- Laughs - My desk doubles as a reloading table for my husband, and is usually covered in mail and children's homework papers. Underneath you'd find it to be a plain old oak desk with four drawers full of things that have nothing to do with writing. It's beaten up, scratched, stained, and warped in places but it has a lot of character.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The release of knowing that someone's story was told. It has always felt as if I am simply the typist for someone else's life story.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. Their enthusiasm for life and their unique viewpoints just astound me. I can't imagine my world without them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing video games with my kids and my husband. We all go hunting together in the fall. I also enjoy sewing, singing, reading and crochet.
What are you working on next?
I have several books in the works. Right now the most prominent is a Young Adult Fiction novel about sorcery and relationships.
