Interview with Henry Martell

How do you approach cover design?
I like the cover to reflect some aspect of the story. Sometimes that requires a graphic artist to create something and sometimes a photo can be used or an image from an archive.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read biographies as I find stories of famous people fascinating. I also still read fantasy and science fiction and also fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Sony E-reader.
Describe your desk
It is L-shaped with shelves on one side. My computer is on one side and everything else on the other.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We have very well defined seasons so that makes them very clear for me.
When did you first start writing?
When I was fourteen.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Tempi Princess is about Maria, a young girl on the planet of Belfort who attempts to become the first female admitted into the warrior brotherhood of Tempi. We follow her journey as she goes from apprentice, through tragedy where she is sold as a slave, to her final success.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It is very difficult to get published nowadays, especially for starting writers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just the writing. When I am inspired, the stories flow in my head and I can't stop so I have to write them down.
What do your fans mean to you?
When I do get fans I hope they will read my work and derive some enjoyment from that.
What are you working on next?
My next book is called Two Rivers and is a mainstream fiction work about a family in the town of Two Rivers.
What is your writing process?
I try to write something every day. The best time for me is in the morning or late at night.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I hate buying a book unseen and then not enjoying it. This has happened a few times so I actually go on the internet and check out books by authors I have read, or recommendations by other people.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Sure, it was a story centered on the world of Belfort and in the times I write about in the Tempi Princess. It was really just another rendition of the Lord of the Rings that I had just read. Needless to say I had to do something different with it so I went to something that inspires me to great heights, beautiful, strong women who accomplish great things but also have a softer side.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Of course the Lord of the Rings was the first story to inspire me but I can't say it was the first. Works by Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury were also pivotal.
