Describe your desk
My desk is controlled chaos. I like to surround myself with family pictures, faith based quotes and Bible scriptures. Kleenex for when I cry. Lotions for when my elbows are ashy lol. Ibuprofen for when I think to hard. There is usally a snack or two on my desk for snack attacks. I like for my desk to remind me of home and the people and things I love.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in West Viriginia. I was one of only a few african americans in the town or school I went to so some times it was hard. You always have a few bad apples in every bunch and sometimes I ran into a few of them. Writing was a way of escape from the hurt and anger of my youth. I just recently began to write again and although now the issues are grown up issues in my life, writing still holds true as being my escape.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to show that even from distruction something good can work out for you. ONe relationship ends, one person is mean to you, but there is always someone else that is the polar opposite of what you have experienced. Also that everyone has baggage, regardless of occupation or physical appearance. Feelings are feelings.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is thinking up charaters and story lines. Although I'm new at this I try to create stories no one has thought about yet. Funny, romantic stories that speak to all our feelings.
What are you working on next?
I'm actually working on a story about love and sandwiches...my son inspired this one. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. Can't wait to share it with you all.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend alot of time with my children, in the summer I love to go to the part. It helps me unwind. We usually have alot going on at church as well. I like to ride out, pick up some ice creame, make up songs and sing them with the kids and we love to crack on each other. I'm really family oriented.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do actually. Its really quite funny. I was in elementary school and I wrote a story about my moms legs. Her legs were always so small. It was called the house that stood on chicken feet and had a character named boney legs. That was my mom. We laughed for days about that story.
How do you approach cover design?
I want all of my covers to be clean, even though I write romance, I don't want it to be rauchy. SO I try to find a cover that sums up the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a real big fan of Lillian Hart and Donna McDonald. Also Nicky Charles is an awesome writer - I don't know why all of her books are free. CHristy Craige is good as well. As you can see Romance is my genre.
What do your fans mean to you?
SInce I'm a new writer, my fans mean the world. Their reviews and purchases of my book determines if I can really making writing my future or if its just an empty dream.
