Interview with Imari Wilson

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Good marketing is extremely important, regardless of what profession you are on. Social media is an excellent platform any business owner can use to promote their brand and generate revenue. I also like to use outside sources that offer advertising and marketing services, such as Fiverr.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am always on the go and love to read various books, my device of choice will always be my Kindle.
Describe your desk
Lol, my desk is filled with lotions and body sprays from Bath and Body Works, along with various scented candles. I also have a Mac Computer on there that I hardly ever use.

Ironically, I don't use my desk for working purposes, it reminds me of being in an office. I prefer to sit on my bed and write my stories either on my lab top, it provides a more relaxing and intimate setting.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York raised by my wonderful mother. I always had a love for reading and writing; however, I didn't tap into my talent until I lived in Louisiana briefly during my teens.

My aunt Lorie and cousin Stacey will often see me write poems and short stories and encourage me to enter in spoken word contest and pursue my writing.

It was there that I entered my first spoken word show and read a poem I've written, titled "I Don't Need A Man."

I remember distinctly reading the poem to the crowd who was loving every word of it. At the end of the poem, I dropped the mic down on the stage floor and walked off the stage dramatically.

Even though the audience loved my performance, the host was very upset at me. Apparently that was own personal mic, and when I dropped it on the floor I broke it.

Regardless, of the outcome I enjoy telling stories and loved how receptive people were of my work. It was this particular experience that strongly influenced me as a writer.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in Junior High School, prior to me moving to Louisiana. My favorite subjects was always History and English, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing essay papers.

My teachers will often compliment me on my style of writing, attention to detail and being able to tell a vivid descriptive story.

I guess I was a writer by nature before I knew it myself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I love to write about topics that are either taboo or not discussed often. Obey Me, is a story about giving into submission.

People often abuse when they hear the word submission. Submission is not about whips, chains and abusing the person you are with.

I wanted to take a different approach to submission of showing men and women yielding to each other willingly, romantically and passionate. Take away the egos, and society fear in lacks of understanding submission and you will see it for what it truly is: a gift, a privilege, an honor any man or woman should be grateful to receive.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is being able to create characters and story lines for people to relate too and fall in love with.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am always appreciate of any feedback whether it is good or bad, a reader has of my work has to provide.

My fans means everything to me because of the real, genuine support they have show towards you as an artist. That love and support is what fuels and encourage you to continue your passion. It is a beautiful feeling to have a fan base of people who supports your vision, they become your second family. I will be always be grateful and appreciative of each and every one of them.
What are you working on next?
I am currently starting my own publishing company called IAM WILSON PUBLISHING, which will feature my publish work and the work of others.

My goal is to create a platform to allow up and coming writers to publish their work and provide them tools and assets they need to be successful authors.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I've been a vegetarian for over 6 years by following a holistic nutrition lifestyle. I love cooking and trying various vegan/vegetarian recipes during my down time.

I plan to release a book on holistic nutrition in the future.
What drives you get out of bed everyday?
I come from a middle class, single parent home. My mother worked hard for everything she has since she was a teenager. I watched my mother struggle at her lowest point in life and watched her flourish at her highest. Regardless, of what hardships she faced, she never let that deter her from being a successful entrepreneur in owning her own event planning company.

My mother, including my ambition to be successful is what motivates me to get out of bed every day. I never wanted to be stuck working a 9-5 for the rest of my life or to struggle financially. I ALWAYS wanted more for myself, and push myself daily to achieve my goals.
