Interview with Imari Wilson

Published 2019-04-19.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am always on the go and love to read various books, my device of choice will always be my Kindle.
Describe your desk
Lol, my desk is filled with lotions and body sprays from Bath and Body Works, along with various scented candles. I also have a Mac Computer on there that I hardly ever use.

Ironically, I don't use my desk for working purposes, it reminds me of being in an office. I prefer to sit on my bed and write my stories either on my lab top or the google doc app on my phone. This provides a more relaxing and intimate setting.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York raised by my wonderful mother. I always had a love for reading and writing; however, I didn't tap into my talent until I lived in Louisiana briefly during my teens.

My aunt Lorie and cousin Stacey will often see me write poems and short stories and encourage me to enter in spoken word contests at the High School I was attending while living there. I will always appreciate them for encouraging me to pursue my writing.

It was there that I entered my first spoken word show and read a poem I've written, titled "I Don't Need A Man."

I remember distinctly reading that poem to the crowd who was loving every word of it. At the end of the poem, I dropped the mic down on the stage floor and walked off the stage dramatically.

Even though the audience loved my performance, the host was very upset at me. Apparently that was his own personal mic, and when I dropped it on the floor, I accidentally broke it.

Regardless, of the outcome I enjoy telling stories and loved how receptive people were of my work. It was this particular experience that strongly influenced me as a writer.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in Junior High School, prior to me moving to Louisiana. My favorite subjects was always History and English, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing essay papers.

My teachers will often compliment me on my style of writing, attention to detail and being able to tell a vivid descriptive story.

I guess I was a writer by nature before I knew it myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is the story telling. I love being able to express my imagination through my writing by creating characters and scenes for readers to connect with.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am always appreciate of any feedback whether it is good or bad, a reader has of my work.

My fans means everything to me because of the real, genuine support they have shown towards me as an artist. That love and support is what fuels and encourages me to continue to pursue my passion. It is a beautiful feeling to have a fan base of people who supports your vision; they become your second family. I will be always be grateful and appreciative of each and every one of them.
What are you working on next?
I am currently starting my own publishing company called IAM WILSON PUBLISHING, which will feature my publish work along with publishing services. My goal is to create a platform to allow up and coming writers to publish their work and provide them tools and assets they need to be successful authors.

i'm also working on completing two graphic novels to release this year.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I've been a vegetarian for over 6 years by following a holistic nutrition lifestyle. I love cooking and trying various vegan/vegetarian recipes during my down time. Eventually, I will release a book on holistic nutrition in the future.

Besides cooking, I love reading, writing and traveling, I'm a very low key person,
What drives you get out of bed everyday?
I come from a middle class, single parent home. My mother worked hard for everything she has since she was a teenager. I watched my mother struggle at her lowest point in life and watched her flourish at her highest. Regardless, of what hardships she faced, she never let that deter her from being a successful entrepreneur in owning her own event planning company.

My mother, including my ambition to be successful is what motivates me to get out of bed every day. I never wanted to be stuck working a 9-5 for the rest of my life or to struggle financially. I ALWAYS wanted more for myself, and push myself daily to achieve my goals.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I don't have a top 5 favorite books, but I do have a top 5 favorite authors who body of work I enjoy reading.

1. Zane
2. Jade Jones
3. Suzanne Enoch
4. Toni Morrison
5. Zora Neale Hurston
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Before I became an indie author I was doing a lot of research in looking for the right publishing company to make my book covers, proofreading and editing, marketing, etc. I came across a lot of expensive companies that charged too much for what I needed to publish my books that wasn't in my budget.

So I looked into other avenues and realized that I can do the exact same thing these companies charged myself or cheaper, while still producing a professional body of work. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and I love being able to have complete creative control of my books.
