Interview with Isobel Starling

Published 2015-11-14.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read, a lot. I decided a couple of years ago to cut down on TV/movies and internet. The number of good books I've read in that year have blown my mind. There are so many fantastic books yet to be discovered...TV is history. Not doing so well with cutting down on the internet though!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly from using Goodreads, and by recomendations from friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
yes, It was fanfic. Every writer has to start somewhere and that was my lead in!
What is your writing process?
I'm a 'pantser'. When the story comes it comes fast. I can write 10.000 words a day sometimes just to get the story out. There is very little concious thought involved. I don't know where the story comes from. When i've written all I can, then I will go back and rearrange/edit.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I rememeber the first novel i read. It was a children's fantasy novel by Julie Andrews (Yes...from the Sound of Music) I remember being completely engrossed in it for a summer when I was 10. From then on I began the search for my next favourite book!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favourites are rarely stand alones:
'Tawny Man Trillogy'- Robin Hobb- affected me deeply- left me a sobbing wreck!
'In the Company of Shadows' Quartet-Santino Hassell and Ais Lin- Same reason's as above!
'Maskerade' by Terry Pratchett-I could list so many more Pratchett books as favourites, he is just a genius!
'Harry Potter'-all of them....wonderful
'The Princess Bride' by William Goldman - A joy!
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly Fantasy/Romance/Adventure/Comedy and i've recently become adidcted to M/M romance. There are some stunning M/M fantasy books out there-'Captive Prince', 'Cresendo', 'ICoS'.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wrote a story i liked. I just wanted to share it...and have control over the content.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just writing is a joy. I love meeting my characters and watching their stories unfold.
