Interview with Ivy Smoak

Published 2018-07-06.
What is one interesting fact about you that you would like your readers to know?
I feel like everyone tries to be so cool on social media…look at my beautiful writing space, look at this ridiculously cute outfit I wear while writing your fav characters, etc. That’s not me. At. All. My writing space is my couch. I wear sweatpants while I’m writing and sometimes I forget to wash my face before 2 in the afternoon. I am not a very social person. Actually, I’m a complete weirdo. And I hope that my readers love me anyway.
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Don’t give up. In college, I got denied by dozens of agents/publishers and I gave up writing for about 5 years. That’s one of my biggest regrets. I could have spent that whole time getting better, but I let others tell me that I wasn’t a good “fit.” Self-publishing was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It allows me to write whatever I’m passionate about and at whatever pace my creativity will allow. It’s a win/win for me.
When did you first start writing?
I've always loved reading. It was my passion growing up. But in college I started writing and I fell in love with the process. It quickly replaced reading as my #1 passion.
Which other authors have most influenced or inspired your writing?
Even though I primarily write romance, I actually prefer reading mysteries and thrillers. Harlan Coben is one of my all time favorite authors. I love un-spinning his webs of deception. JK Rowling and Ann Brashares have influenced me a lot too – books you read as a child sometimes have the greatest impact of all.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and it’s influenced my writing so much more than I first realized. Most of my books take place in Delaware. And my characters use weird local phrases that I didn’t know were weird and local until readers pointed them out to me. For example, apparently water ice is called Italian Ice everywhere else. I put that in one of my books and everyone was like…what the heck is water ice? Is it water or ice? Oops.
Describe your desk
I actually don’t have one! I always write on the couch or outside on the porch. No desk necessary. I feel like I can’t write unless I’m insanely comfortable.
What do you read for pleasure?
I absolutely love a good mystery novel. Harlan Coben novels take up a noticeable amount of space on my bookshelves.
If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?
I would tell them to read a book that they actually enjoy. Being forced to read a book that you don't actually like doesn't do anyone any good. It just makes kids hate reading. But if I really had to choose...I'd say Harry Potter. It's one of those books that has a little something for everyone. And who doesn't like a little magic?
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the next book in my series, The Hunted. The first book in that series was the very first book that I self-published. The characters are based on my husband and me and how we met. That series is my heart and soul and I like to visit those characters at least once a year.
What is your writing Kryptonite?
Deadlines. Whenever I put a book up for pre-order, I suddenly feel like I can’t possibly finish it on time. The pressure really gets to me.
What is the one thing you want your readers to know about your books?
That all of my books have a piece of my heart in them. I’m so invested in all the characters, and when you’re reading I hope you see that in their stories. I don’t think I’ve written a book without crying and typing at the same time…so get the tissues ready!
