Interview with Jennifer Christie Temple

What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to design and edit my own book was the major factor but I think self-publishing has a lot of advantages. With traditional publishing, my work might be available for a few weeks before it's pulled from the retailer's shelves. As an indie author, my writing is up there on the Internet forever and can be accessed for as long as people want to take a look.

I've been a writer for magazines and newspapers for years and I don't think I would have ever gained the expertise to self-publish if I hadn't discovered Smashwords. The site provides all the information for publishing a quality book for free and, after decades of being at the mercy of traditional publishing houses, I was amazed and delighted to find a place where I can manage my work myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has always been an outlet for my creativity. I've written short stories and humour up to this point because I found that was what magazines and newspapers were prepared to buy. I've loved poetry all my life but it's so hard to get a traditional publisher to take a chance on any new poet. I honestly believe that indie publishing has been responsible for the upsurge of interest in poetry and poets over the past few years.
What do your fans mean to you?
I've been lucky enough to have received a good reception for my poetry. I'm constantly amazed and flattered that anyone wants to read what I have to write, so I suppose I'd say, my fans mean everything to me.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on another collection of poems first but I'd like to publish a collection of original short stories too. Watch this space.
