Interview with JD Moorea

Published 2018-01-27.
Describe your desk
Very basic, but effective. No clutter. Just a laptop, notepad, a coffee, water and an iPad for research.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Queensland, Australia. The beach and ocean nearby are calming and allow me to write freely.
When did you first start writing?
Grade 9 in high school (14 years old).
What's the story behind your latest book?
I set a goal of reading 50 books in a one year period, to improve my life, finances, health and overall happiness. As the year unfolded, I ended up reading 280 books. With so much new-found information, I felt that it was my duty so share what I had learnt. I wanted to help others achieve the same success in their lives that I had; without having to read 280 books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
There are great opportunities these days, with less restrictions of large publishing firms.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have assisted in the process of getting my books into readers hands.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sitting down and reading through a hard copy of the final product when it arrives in the post and being able to look back at how the final product had unfolded, since the first day, the process began.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them, my ideas, stories and teachings go to waste.
What are you working on next?
A tell all memoir of my time working on cruise ships, titled "C.R.U.I.S.E" (Can't Rest Until I've Sailed Everywhere). Then a funny look, in the 5 star hospitality industry, called, "Hospitable".
Who are your favorite authors?
Tony Robbins, Dr John Demartini, Dr Wayne Dyer, Benjamin Graham, Esther & Jerry Hicks, Napoleon Hill, Bob Proctor.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Being creative, creating the life I want, creating life experiences and .... coffee!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly, thinking of what to write next, thinking up funny stories, travelling to amazing destinations, giving to charities, messing around with my dogs and relaxing on the water in my boat.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By hearing books mentioned by authors that I am currently reading. This usually ensures, that it is a continuum of what I am currently learning.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a story of what would happen if every musician (dead and alive), were to converge on one person's house, for a party. The story only used band / artist names, so the way the story unfolded, was totally dependent on the several hundred names, that the story contained.
What is your writing process?
Come up with an idea, list chapters, list stories for each chapter, then begin writing the individual stories.
How do you approach cover design?
I research similar book ideas, and usually search my database of 5,000+ photos that I have taken from around the world, to find the one that fits best. This becomes the base for the cover, as I like it to be personal.
What do you read for pleasure?
Only personal development, investing, or spiritual books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an iPad, but most of my books, are audio books, so its a library app, called "overdrive". My local library system has over 50,000 books for free, so I use that.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. It impacted me by getting me an A+ in creative writing in grade 9. I then resubmitted the same story with a different teacher in grade 10 and once again got an A+ (a bit cheeky, I know).
