Interview with Joseph Pass

How do you approach cover design?
I believe a cover says an awful lot about the novel. So, I want a cover that 'pops' and is relevant to content. Now, having said all that, I believe 'Hail Atlantis' is a more cerebral rather than action style story. For that reason, I chose the cover you see. By the way, the cover is an actual photograph of my granddaughter Kaylise.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This is a trick question, right? My reading favorites will always be sci-fi or something that borders on it. And for the last couple of years I have been very drawn to new authors. It gets me kind of excited to walk into a bookstore and grab a first edition by someone new. So far I have been very pleased with my recent reads.
Describe your desk
Pretty much my lap!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in central Indiana on a working farm. I suppose the hours of doing hard but rather mindless work, gave my mind ample time to foster the ideas that have found their way to the pages of this book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The idea for this book came to me many years ago when I was just an awkward teen. I often wondered what happened to the atmosphere that used to surround Mars. I wondered, if, there had ever been intelligent life there; before the atmosphere went away. This story developed from those early wonderings.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Frustration with the printed machine! And a burning belief Hail Atlantis is a great story that truly needs to be read by many people.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There is nothing like writing with emotion and seeing that emotion on the face of a reader.
What are you working on next?
I am starting the sequel to Hail Atlantis The beginning. Book two, as yet unnamed, will follow the colonists on their journey to Angelinica (Earth) and tell the story of how they settled here.
Who are your favorite authors?
The first Sci-fi book I ever read was Dune. Frank Herbert hooked me with that one. Then I got hold of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien built as good, if not better, an imaginary world as Herbert. So I would say those two are my very favorite authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Breathing? I don't know, I suppose the wonder of everything that happens. The feel of my wife, the morning sun, the clean fresh air. Everything, really.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a full time job building highways that always seem to be too crowded!

Forty-thousand years ago our race lived on what we now call Mars. An asteroid named Atlantis brought a fiery end to that civilization. Thanks to an ominous warning from a spirit child named Kaylise, we had a fifteen year warning before our extermination. 'The Beginning' shows us the struggles our ancestors endured to ensure our survival. Book Two to follow.
