Interview with J.L. Higgs

Who are your favorite authors?
It depends on my mood. I like Pittacus Lore (James Frey), John Marsden, Janet Evanovich, Lee Childs, James Patterson and others that catch my eye at the local library.
Hands down favourite is Suzanne Collins with her Hunger Games series.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Nothing is that inspirational. Just kidding. A new day brings new opportunities to give people a reason to smile. I love gardening and teaching people about the bible.
Seriously though, I do most of my writing in bed as I suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (M.E.) and Fibromyalgia.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am growing unusual roses, mostly from seeds, as a hobby.
I also enjoy spending time with family and friends. Each week I help teach the Bible to those who want to see the answers from the actual bible and not from what a religion or church might tell them.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I love reading book reviews. I visit libraries and bookstores, get recommendations from family and friends, and generally keep my ears open to what others offer. I find the story blurb is more important in helping make the decision whether I read it or not, than if I know the author.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a dream I had one night that was so incredibly vivid that I managed to write it down the next morning. My children wanted to know what happened next. Well, I woke up, didn't I. The first complete novel was Dark Charity but it kept going through constant changes. The first one to be completed was Ella: A Stepmum's Tale. As I was viewed as a wicked stepmum by my stepchildren at the time, this was a very therapeutic book to write and flowed easily.
What is your writing process?
I have a very random process. I am often writing two stories at one time as ideas may not fit in the one I am working on but will with another. Sometimes I have a definite idea of the whole book from beginning to end, but most of the times I only know where I want it to end up with no idea how it is going to get there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, I grew up on a cattle station (large ranch) where everyone in the house read books. I was an avid reader of Trixie Beldon stories as they had horses in them. I would often pretend I was her while I was out riding my horse.
How do you approach cover design?
I am not very good at this yet. Still learning. I have taken to looking at the Amazon Bestsellers list and Cover competition winners. I hired a designer to redo all the covers of my 4 books. The next two I have designed myself with a lot of feedback from Twitter and the fantastic group of Subscribers to my newsletter.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Suzanne Collins and the Hunger Games series. Hands down winners. Closely followed by the I am Number Four series by Pittacus Lore.
What do you read for pleasure?
It depends on my mood and brain fog. For light reading, I enjoy educational books, mainly about gardening and health solutions.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my iPad Air 2 but I don't know if that counts as an e-reader.
