Interview with Jason Langin

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Actually, I do know. It was "The Elves and the Shoemaker." I used to have a ton of books with records. I'm definitely dating myself with that! You'd listen to the record as you read along. I think I listened to this one so much that I memorized the words. I still have the book too!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
#1 1984 by George Orwell. Favorite book period - That's an easy answer. #2 Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. I felt like when I finished this trilogy I had been given a great gift. #3 Elfquest by Wendy & Richard Pini. The greatest graphic epic ever. Reading this changed my life. I know that sounds corny, but it's true. #4 Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. So funny. A book I loved as a kid that still holds up. #5 The Complete Works of Jules Verne - Ha! Found a tricky way out of this one! This man was so ahead of his time, it's ridiculous.
How do you approach cover design?
I don't. I leave that to some special people - former students of mine. I've been fortunate to work with some very talented students. Luckily, they've been willing to help out. I have some ideas for what I want, and I let my kids do the rest. Freddy Ventura, Isabel Weir, Emma Keller, and Reagan King are all incredibly talented, and I liked giving them the opportunity to do something so public.
Describe your desk
There's a desk under here?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and I think that influenced my writing a great deal. So many great writers and artists came from Brooklyn. It just had a lot of character, a lot of culture, and it was home. I was just happy there. I always identified with stories of kids who lived in cities because I understood.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's an escape. I can make whatever I want happen. I have so many short stories and parts of stories that will probably go nowhere. I don't care. I wrote them for me. That's what it really has to be about.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have fans? Hey, I am honored if ANYONE takes the time to read one of my stories. I love the fact that I can share my stories at all, and I hope people will keep wanting to read.
