Interview with Justin M.D. Nelson

What are your five favorite books, and why?
"1984" by George Orwell
Dystopian literature at its absolute finest. I still have yet to read anything in the genre as captivating and unnerving as Orwell's story.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky.
I didn't think I could actually "love" fictional characters until I read this book.

"The October Country" by Ray Bradbury
The perfect collection of short fiction.

"Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown
A story that approaches the "science vs. religion" debate in a way that is suspenseful, engaging, and clever.

"Zealot" by Reza Aslan
This book will challenge EVERYTHING you thought you knew about Christianity.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a part time actor. I've appeared in a few shows around the Minneapolis area. I also love long walks around the lake, and an evening with good friends.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite author is Ray Bradbury. He wrote stories about dystopian futures, science fiction, gothic horror, and childhood nostalgia, all things that I love. Also, his writing style is very unique in that his stories seem more like works of poetry than prose.

I also love Chuck Klosterman, a North Dakota native with amazing essays on American Pop Culture, Dan Brown, who writes suspenseful stories that are amazingly clever, and Stephen King, because I can't help but love a good scary story.
What do you read for pleasure?
My taste in reading is eclectic. I will read any work of dystopian fiction, as well as any book about religion, especially Christianity. I also love a good dark and scary story. I try to read as many of the classics as possible--there's a reason they've been around as long as they have. Finally, any well-written piece of non fiction is always interesting to me.
What are you working on next?
I have two projects going on right now. One is a book of short fiction titled "Occurrences", which will be available sometime in 2015.

I am also taking part in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). All through November, I will be working on a science fiction novel. I'll have more information on this novel soon.
