Interview with Pete Bowen

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Ah, that's an easy one, finishing the damn book. Of course, it seems like it's never done. I think I could continue to rewrite forever. There always seems to be a better way to phrase something. I finally get to the point where I throw up my hands and say, "That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more"! There is some joy at that point.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love getting feed back from the fans, that's why I leave an email address at the end of the book. It encourages me to continue to write with these characters, people love them.
What are you working on next?
I working on the third book in the series. It will probably be the last. By the time it's done that will make five years on the same characters. Time to move on to something else...maybe.
Who are your favorite authors?
I wish I could write with the flourish of James Lee Burke. I've loved all his books but papa bear is John La Carre.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Kamala Beach is a small community on the the island of Phuket in Thailand. Then I'm inspired by my beautiful wife and our idyllic life here with many friends. I'm a lucky man.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a blues musician playing guitar and singing at the local pubs. When I'm not strumming, I'm surfing the net as a news junky.
What is your writing process?
I try and write 500 words a day. When I get to 50,000 words I start the endless editing process. Writing is fun, editing is drudgery.
How do you approach cover design?
I designed the first few covers myself with photoshop. This time I had a used a professional designer when I discovered a site called Fiverr. For $5 I found someone who did a great job of designing a cover me. I tipped them.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love mysteries, obviously, but I really have varied interests. I love historical books. I recently finished Shelby Foote's History of the Civil War. I'm an audio-book freak. I always have one going. I go to bed with one every night. Nothing better than having someone read you to sleep.
When did you first start writing?
I took some creative writing courses in college, but I started writing after I retired and moved to Thailand at 59. I should have been writing all my life but never found the time or was just too lazy. I look back at my life now and think of all that time I wasted just earning a living and not doing the creative thing I enjoy most in life, writing. It might be a little late for a do-over. I still got some time on the clock.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to get my book out there and eBook publishing was the perfect venue. Anyone can write and publish a book now. I'm amazed at how many people I've reached. I've had the free versions of my books downloaded over 300,000 times. How could an unknown author expect to get his work out any other way? This new 2nd edition of QB1 and The Liz in one book The Tom Mullins Mysteries is the first time I've charged for my books. I've spent a lot of time rewriting the stories and I think I've become a better writer.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a fantastic resource for me. With the distribution getting out to the resellers, I can't imagine a better resource.
