Interview with JR Barker

Published 2013-08-30.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the UK, but what influenced my writing was what I read rather than where I lived.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My other half.

I used to write for myself, but when my partner saw what I'd written he encouraged me to publish
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I suppose it's the act of creating something, when the words start flowing and you're creating a whole new world made from the words in your head, a world that can thrive or perish at your say so, it gives you a strange sense of joy and a freedom.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on two things right now, a long Adventure story and a series of short stories.
Who are your favorite authors?
Terry Pratchett, Conn Iggulden, Roald Dahl
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My alarm clock, it's less of an inspiration and more of a nagging reminder that I have to wake up.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, the next best thing to writing.
Swimming, walking, drinking tea and eating chocolate.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon or recommendations.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a story I wrote with my childhood best friend about a man who was so clumsy he generated scientific interest. The scientists experimented on the unwitting man by grafting ears onto his personage. It ended up by him discovering that he was an alien and using his new ears to track down the mother ship.
What is your writing process?
I tend to write a short piece then let it germinate in the back of my mind. There may be several different versions before I end up with one that I am completely happy with,
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was Wind in the Willows. My mother taught me how to read using this book, I would say it had a fairly big impact on me and my love of reading.

Now not only must he battle to control his new body, which is frequently prone to malfunction, but he must also avoid being eaten by things that are bigger than him as he tries to find his way back to the castle to find out who wants him out of the way and why.
